The NY Giants Could Fix Pass Rush with Aaron Kampman

The Giants have made some good changes on the defensive side of the ball this off season.  Bill Sheridan the first year defensive coordinator, and Mike Wauffle, the six year defensive line coach were let go. Perry Fewell comes in to light a spark under guys like Barry Cofield, Aaron Ross, Michael Johnson, and Osi Umenyiora to name a few.

I want one more change…

I want Aaron Kampman to play for the New York Giants.

This guy is perfect for Big Blue.   Kampman has excelled as a defensive end in the 4-3 system for 8 years.  Only recently as 2009 was he switched to linebacker; however, the move hurt Kampman & The Packers.

Even though he was getting better as a stand up backer, he often looked uncomfortable in coverage.  Kampman will always be better with his hand in the dirt rushing the QB.

The Packers now have AJ Hawk and Clay Mathews to fit there new defense and Kampman the Free Agent might be on the outside looking in.  That’s were the Giants step in.  Kampman is a “lunch pail” type of guy, he loves football and players hard every down.

Where do you put him you ask?

Think back to 2007 when the Giants won the Super Bowl.  They won it with defense.  The ends were Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora.  Cofield, Robbins, and Justin Tuck were on the inside.

The 2010 season could start off with Justin Tuck and Cofield on the inside with Canty rotating in.  Kampman and Osi or Kiwi on the outside.   Alford will be a wait and see situation after his knee surgery and rehab.

Look at his stats: Aaron Kampman, the 6′ 4″ 260 pound defensive end/linebacker has had some great seasons as a Packer.  6.5 sacks in 2005, 15.5 sacks in 2006 and 12.0 sacks in 2007, 9.5 sacks in 2008 and 3.5 in only 9 games before getting hurt and playing a new position.

Robbins, Tuck , Osi and Cofield ONLY has 6.5 sacks between them. Robbins and Bernard should be cut and Justin Tuck should be moved back inside to his normal position.  No one can deny he is much more effective on the inside.

Kampman, an Iowa product has a motor that won’t quit and he plays hard every down…I am confident that he would be a perfect fit for the New York Giants and a fix to their “pressure” problems.

If the Giants let Kampman slip through their fingers be prepared to see #74 playing for the Eagles, the Redskins or the Jets who today displayed their lack of pass rush from the outside.

Good idea. Getting someone to move Tuck back inside makes sense. Robbins and Bernard need to go. The priority in the draft should MLB and FS, followed by ORT. DT is a need but the idea of the rotation suggested by the Kampman move takes that need off the table.

    Thanks for the read Al,

I love Tuck’s game and he’s a class act; however, moving him inside where he could use his strength and speed against big slow guys could be a huge move for our defense. I don’t know what will be done by the new DC, but maybe Tuck won’t move inside because the big boys inside…don’t get paid like the flashy guys on the outside.

Getting rid of Sheridan was the best move the team could have made. Kampman would be an okay edition as long as he could be acquired at a low price. I don’t think he would be a good OLB in a 4-3, so it would definitely have to be as a pass-rusher. We’re pretty set at that position, but as Ernie Accorsi said, you can never have enough!

Kampman can only excel as a defensive end; however, I do believe he can play linebacker if needed. As far as the Giants linebackers are concerned. The strong side should be filled by Clint Sintim and Boley is very good on the weak-side. The major problem for the GMEN is the inside linebacker and getting production from Osi.

Kampman may also get slapped with a franchise tag. That would squash any ideas of bringing him in.

The Giants definately need some new blood and some changes with their defense. That definately sounds like a great move if they do take advantage of it

Thank you for the read Michael. The new Defensive Coordinator should be enough new blood for 2010. Too much turnover crushes the chemistry.

Also, look for Robbins and or Bernard not to return. Kampman will be tough to acquire but worth it.
