The Cleveland Browns Are Having A Solid Draft

April 23, 2010 by

The Cleveland Browns entered the NFL Draft with some serious needs. After three rounds, the Browns have managed to address some of those weaknesses.

I have let it be known that I wanted the Browns to get help in the secondary, which I felt was the teams biggest need. Evidently Tom Heckert, Mike Holmgren and Eric Mangini felt the same way by selecting a corner back and a safety with their first two picks. Getting a quarterback late in the third round was a shrewd move. Coming up with a running back in the second round was a bit of a surprise, i didn’t see that one coming. Cleveland also selected an offensive guard with pick number 92.

With three picks left in the final four rounds, numbers 160, 177 and 186, here’s a look at the newest members of the Cleveland Browns.

Round 1 (7)   Joe Haden CB, Florida – The top rated corner in the draft. Haden is a physical player who excels against the run as well as the pass. The Browns needed a lot of help in the secondary and with the additions of Sheldon Brown, along with Haden and T.J. Ward, they have helped themselves immensely.

Round 2 (38)   T.J. Ward S, Oregon – Ward is a physical player who loves to make the big hit. A solid tackler who can also cover. Ward would have probably been a first round pick if not for injuries that seemed to plagued him in college. Cleveland checked him out before the draft and were not concerned about any past injuries.

Round 2 (59)  Montario Hardesty RB, Tennessee - A big, physical runner at 6-0 225, Hardesty will join a talented and crowed backfield in Cleveland. The Browns must really like him because they traded a third and two fifths to Philadelphia to move back into the second round. Tom Heckert thinks Hardesty can be a feature back.

Round 3 (85)  Colt McCoy QB, Texas – McCoy is a very accurate QB and knows how to win. His leadership and mobility are also a plus. Cleveland may have got a steal with this pick.

Round 3 (92)  Shawn Lauvao G, Arizona State – The Browns hope Lauvao can fill the need at right guard. At 6-3 305, he is a strong run blocker who played some left tackle in college.

  • Joey says:

they passsed on jimmy clasuen TWICE

so who cares if mccoy knows how to win
many spread system qbs who play on college powerhouses always win
he made no reads in college and combine that with no upside at all(poor deep accuracy, bad arm, small)

  • Gary Wertman says:

    Joey,
McCoy would’ve been my pick over Clausen. McCoy is extremely accurate, with a good enough arm and an outstanding leader. Those words came from Mike Holmgren who liked McCoy better than Clausen.
