Texans Win In Bengal Land!

October 19, 2009 by

Maybe I should quit previewing games.  It seems like every time I do the research and write a preview of a Texans game they come out and lose.  On the other hand when I don’t preview a game and just let them play, they win.

The Texans were underdogs to the 4-1 Bengals and everyone, including our own Andy Benoit, picked the Bengals to win easily over a suspect Houston Defense.  Well it didn’t turn out that way with the Texans putting up 28 points and winning it going away.

The Texans run defense showed up and limited the league leading rusher to just 44 yards on 16 carries.  The pass defense was present also, limiting Ochochinco to just 103 yards receiving and 0, read it 0, touchdowns.  The Texans defensive unit limited the Bengals to just 296 total yards of offense, 17 points and forced 3 turnovers.   The Texans shutout the Bengals in the second half of the game.

Meanwhile the Bengals defense lost their no. 1 defensive pass rusher, Odom, to an possibly season ending injury and DT Peko to an knee injury, both in the first quarter.  With those two injuries the Bengal defense was helpless against a red hot Matt Schuab and a unstoppable Andre Johnson.

Schuab threw for 392 yards and a career high tying 4 TD’s with only 1 interception on what looked like a high floater at the end of the first half.  Andre Johnson did what he does best, make secondaries pay for every little mistake, he had 8 catches for 135 yards.  Owen Daniels made the Bengals pay in the red zone with 7 catches for 78 yards and 2 TD’s.

The Texans run game was still pretty much missing in action although they did manage to rack up 87 total yards.  The Texans seemed to have found a solution for this though, with Slayton catching 6 passes for 102 yards and a TD, mostly on screen passes.  It appears that the Texans may be starting  to use the screen pass and short passes for a running game.  This is something a lot of teams do when their running game is not doing to well.

Now the Texans are 3-3 on the year and no one knows how they will fair against the rest of the schedule but if they can play the rest of the season like they did Sunday against the Bengals, it could get interesting.

In other news, I have been noticing a lot of articles/blogs about how Coach Kubiak should/will be fired.  I have also noticed a lot more comments on these articles agreeing with that course of action.  I don’t know about everyone else but I don’t see Kubiak getting fired unless the Texans fall to something like 6-10 or worse and I do think that he can get the Texans to the playoffs and possibly deep into the playoffs.  As for all of those commenter’s saying how bad he is, look at the Texans records and stats from the beginning to now and you see a definite improvement.  Wait until the season is over before making any calls for coaching/player changes.

Next week the 49ers come to town and we shall see what we shall see.  Hopefully the Texans D will play like they did Sunday.  We know the offense will.
