Trying to evaluate just what the San Diego Chargers need with the offseason is a difficult task. Do you evaluate them as a 13-3 juggernaut that tripped itself up in a less than ideal situation? A few limited tweaks would then be all that is necessary.
Or do you look to the team as a bit of an overachiever? A 10 win team that found a way to win a few extra times? This approach obviously warrants a much deeper consideration, and a few broader changes.
The answer lies somewhere in between. Both looks share the common thread of a change to the running game. That one is the team’s first priority with Tomlinson’s slim chance of a return growing even slimmer.
Past that, it becomes a difficult order of [...]

This offseason, the San Diego Chargers have a few key concerns, as well as a host of smaller ones. Looking back at the 2009 season, what stands out most is the NFL’s 31st-ranked rushing attack despite the backfield’s strong resume.
What bodes well for the team is that four of the league’s five worst rushing teams boasted dynamic and effective offenses alongside winning records (Indianapolis, San Diego, Houston, and Arizona). Three of those were playoff teams, with the last-place Colts earning a Super Bowl bid.
That tells us that San Diego need not necessarily improve to the league’s upper half in running the football. It does not, however, mean that moderate improvement is not necessary.
What went [...]

A lot of people have been saying a lot of crap about the Indianapolis Colts. They say the Colts are going to lose another playoff game just like every other time they are one-or-two-seeded team. Well, listen here: it’s not going to happen this time.
Yeah, the Baltimore Ravens shocked the New England Patriots, but I don’t see them beating a team like Indy.
Also, a lot of guys have been saying the Colts care about individual stats more than they want to go 19-0. Okay, seriously, who cares about going 19-0, okay? Really? Yeah, I was rooting for them to go for it, but it won’t matter really. So what if you go 16-0? What if you lose in the playoffs, huh? The Colts will then most likely have too much confidence and think every team is easy.
Just ask [...]

The Cincinnati Bengals did their best to honor the memory of Chris Henry but fell short in a 27-24 loss to the San Diego Chargers. Fans got to see a classic duel between two great quarterbacks. It was an emotional and hard-fought football game with the Nate Kaeding giving the Chargers the lead by kicking a 53-yard field goal with three seconds on the clock.
Offense
Carson Palmer had his best game of the season, completing 27 of 40 passes for 314 yards. He spread the ball around to eight different players, including touchdowns to Chad Ochocinco and Laveranues Coles. It was a much different celebration for Ochocinco this time. He dropped to his knees, tapped his heart and had words for "Slim", his former teammate who was surely cheering him on from [...]

It will be a long flight home for the Bengals after a heartbreaking loss to the Chargers. Doing their best to honor their fallen teammate, Chris Henry, the Bengals fought hard but ended up on the losing side of a 27-24 final score.
Playing in front of family and friends, Carson Palmer had his best game of the season. Palmer exceeded 300 yards passing for the first time since 2007 and had two touchdowns. His only miscue was an interception in the third quarter.
Two major problems continue to plague the Bengals. The offense consistently struggles to score touchdowns in the red zone. The other problem is penalties. Mental mistakes are absolutely destroying this team's chances to win.
The Bengals missed another chance to wrap-up the AFC North. They will try again next week when the [...]

San Diego looked like a team headed for the playoffs in beating the Cleveland Browns 30-23. The Browns put up a fight much like you would not expect from a 1-11 team. While the 2009 season will go down in Browns' history as one of its worst ever, they are still playing hard.
In a season to forget, Cleveland may have found a few pieces to their puzzle in the loss to San Diego. Quarterback Brady Quinn looked solid against the Chargers, throwing for 271 yards and three touchdowns. It looks like Cleveland won't have to use a draft pick on a QB next spring. Quinn is starting to look like the player the Browns thought they were getting with the 22nd pick in the 07 draft.
Cleveland may have also found a tight end in 6-6 247 pound Evan Moore, who caught six passes for 80 yards in his [...]

The Colts had this game right from the start. It was just an easy game. Although the Titans were on a five-game winning-streak, and looking dangerous, the Colts were on a eleven-game winning-streak, and counting, as they move on to 12-0.
Joseph Addai played well, scoring the team’s first touchdown, and having another one, along with 79 yards.
Peyton Manning threw for 270 yards along with a touchdown. Vince Young played well, and was looking to for a win after playing his best game of his career just last week against the Arizona Cardinals. He passed for 241 yards with two touchdowns and one pick.
The Titans had a lot of chances to win this game. They had wasted opportunities in the red zone, and the score should have been much tighter. Nate Washington had a chance to put up a [...]

With the San Diego Chargers coming to town, Eric Mangini is searching for some healthy bodies. Jamaal Lewis, D'Qwell Jackson, Eric Barton, Shaun Rogers, Brodney Pool, James Davis, Ryan Tucker, Dave Zastudil and Steve Heiden are all on injured reserve. With a 1-10 record, Eric Mangini, Brady Quinn and the rest of the Browns are in survival mode. Mangini and Quinn have their futures with the team at stake while many are waiting for the season to end. For players like Coye Francies, David Veikune, Brian Robiskie and Ahtyba Rubin, these games are a chance to prove they belong.

In a quite interesting move, the Chiefs didn't let 2005 pro bowl wide receiver Chris Chambers stay unemployed for long. After being put on waivers monday by the San Diego Chargers, the Chiefs have decided to claim Chambers off waivers just 24 hours after his released.
Per profootballtalk (PFT) Chris Chambers has been claimed by the Chiefs. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/11/03/chiefs-claim-chris-chambers/
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, this isn't the same Chambers that was in Miami. Nagging injuries to his ankle have severely tarnished his career, taking him from a 70 catch 1000 yard [...]

"Will the real Matt Cassel, please stand up?"
For those on the Chiefs football team that didn't stand up, congratulations, you were on the trade block. I wish I could have made this up.
The last week of the NFL has been one of the most exciting that the league has ever had around the time of the trade deadline. The Chiefs themselves even made a move, dealing nose tackle Tank Tyler to Carolina for an undisclosed draft pick in 2010. By the looks of it, it doesn't seem like Tyler was the only Chief who was wondering about where his home will be next week.
As the old saying goes, "Peace Sells, but Who's Buying?" Apparently, Todd Haley and Scott Pioli sure aren't. There was no secret to Haley's minimal stance for misbehavior by his newly acquired team during training camp this past [...]
