Finally the Bears disposed of some wasted roster space. They released veteran fullback Jason McKie. The 29 year old, appeared in 71 games with 35 starts in seven seasons with the Bears. He rushed for 84 yards and 3 touchdowns on 29 carries and caught 62 passes for 344 yards and 3 TDs. The Carolina Panthers have seemingly taken a 180-degree turn in their pursuit of Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers. According to his agent, Carl Carey, the Panthers have "not made a single inquiry this offseason" in regards to contract negotiations with the team's top pick in the 2002 draft. This is a complete reversal of their strategy from last year, where head coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney seemed adamant about keeping Peppers in town, eventually placing the team's franchise tag on him when negotiations for a long term contract fizzled out.
