The San Francisco 49ers head into the 2010 season as the front runners to win the NFC West. With Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner retiring this offseason, the 49ers have become the default choice to win the division in the upcoming season. Even before San Francisco selects two potential impact players in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft, they have already had these playoff expectations thrust upon them by  fans and analysts around the league. Without question, the 49ers will have the on-field talent to reach these expectations. The 49ers already have play-makers on both sides of the ball with Dashon Goldson, Justin Smith, and Patrick Willis on defense and Frank Gore, Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree on offense. Add in the draft choices and free agent pickups and [...] Continue reading →
Another San Francisco 49er nemesis has retired. The 49er faithful hope this one stays retired. If he does, the NFC West will be wide open in 2010. Early Friday afternoon, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner officially hung up his cleats after a 12-year career that includes two MVPs and three Super Bowl appearances including one Super Bowl ring. Two of the three teams (and the two that saw him lead them to the Super Bowl) Warner played for were division foes of the 49ers. Warner first torched the 49ers as a member of the St. Louis Rams and the "Greatest Show on Turf" and then after a dismal stint with the New York Giants, returned to the NFC West as a member of the Cardinals and decimated the [...] Continue reading →
Oh, I can recall a time not too long ago when I didn’t even imagine this article would need to be written. Looking back to week four, the 49ers were looking good. They sat at 3-1 and nowhere to go but up. They controlled their own destiny. Nobody was telling us anything, they were showing us. So what happened? The Niners season has been plagued with what are called “morale victories”. Basically, this team finished 7-9 last season under Mike Nolan and naturally, some time for improvement was needed. The team could handle a loss every now and then so long as this looked like an improved unit when all was said and done. And they did. In week three the 49ers got their first loss of the season, but what did it take? It took the play [...] Continue reading →
Perhaps the most encouraging stat for Arizona fans going into their Week 1 matchup versus the 49ers is that Ken Whisenhunt's teams are 14-4 at home. They will desperately need that home field advantage assuming San Francisco has taken on the personality of their new head coach Mike Singletary, whose fire and intense gaze struck fear into opponents throughout his illustrious Hall of Fame career. Singletary promises a rush first offensive attack, made apparent by their selection of Shaun Hill as their starting QB. Hill does not possess outstanding athleticism or an exceptionally strong arm. He does however exude leadership and a throwback, tough attitude reminiscent of [...] Continue reading →

New York Giants 21, Pittsburgh Steelers 14 Great win for the Giants – they were clearly the better team on Sunday. The New York secondary absolutely stifled the Steeler receivers (you may have noticed Ben Roethlisberger holding the ball for half an hour every time he dropped back). Also, Pittsburgh’s mediocre offensive line could not handle the Giants’ aggressive front seven. [...] Continue reading →
