LaDainian Tomlinson

This isn't Pete Carroll's first go around as an NFL head coach but it is his first off season as a NFL head coach AND executive vice president.  Not only is Carroll the EVP and head coach but if there is a discrepancy between Carroll and new general manager John Schneider, Pete Carroll would win the coin flip 100 percent of the time. According to Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke the team will be built around both Carroll and Schneider but should their be a discrepancy about a trade/signing/draft pick Carroll would be awarded his decision because the team is going to be built around Carroll's philosophy. Now as [...] Continue reading →
As the free agency deadline nears the major movement in the NFL has come from the running back position this past week with five running backs being let go or non tendered to free agency. San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson, Philadelphia's Brian Westbrook, Cleveland's Jamal Lewis, San Diego's Darren Sproles and New Orleans' Mike Bell. Also New York Jets running back Thomas Jones will be released next week so he will be added to the list when that becomes official. Terrell Owens was informed by the Buffalo Bills Saturday that the 36 year old wide receiver would not be back with the organization in 2010 making him a free agent. The New [...] Continue reading →
This offseason, the San Diego Chargers have a few key concerns, as well as a host of smaller ones.  Looking back at the 2009 season, what stands out most is the NFL’s 31st-ranked rushing attack despite the backfield’s strong resume. What bodes well for the team is that four of the league’s five worst rushing teams boasted dynamic and effective offenses alongside winning records (Indianapolis, San Diego, Houston, and Arizona).  Three of those were playoff teams, with the last-place Colts earning a Super Bowl bid. That tells us that San Diego need not necessarily improve to the league’s upper half in running the football.  It does not, however, mean that moderate improvement is not necessary. What went [...] Continue reading →
Josh McDaniels, you truly are a disciple of Bill Bellichick. You embody Bellichick's maverick spirit, going against the grain of conventional wisdom in order to storm your way to victory. No, wait—it's one thing to go for it on 4th-and-2 in the waning moments of the fourth quarter in order to put a game out of reach, it's another thing to try and convert an onside kick in the third quarter, down by just ten points. Really, Josh? McDaniels' brilliant coaching mind is also responsible for three failed fourth-down attempts by the Broncos. Also, why play Chris Simms right off the bat knowing full well that Kyle Orton could go if needed? Did anyone really think Simms was going to lead the [...] Continue reading →
Game recaps are a thing of the past. Let's face it, it takes way less than a thousand monkeys banging on a thousand typewriters for a thousand years to bang out a decent NFL post-game stat sheet. SportsCenter's on your iPhone and on the web, 24 hours a day. Even if you missed that, by the time you pick up your morning paper the next day, you already heard about it on the radio and the morning news on TV. Admit it, you didn't come here for no stinkin' recap. You're here for fresh, hard-hitting analysis that takes no prisoners and has no vested interest in "playing nice" with Chargers players and brass. And that's what you're going to get from now on with "Charged Up." The Chargers beat a solid Eagles team last Sunday behind a more balanced offensive attack and smart [...] Continue reading →
My dad's a pretty old-fashioned guy. Strong willed, doesn't say much, doesn't express much in the ways of emotion. What you see is what you get, and sometimes, things are better left unsaid. Which is why it's such a kick to watch him on Sunday afternoons. Few things in life excite him as much as the National Football League does. Sure, he always tells stories about how great it felt to watch his sons being born (I, of course, either wasn't there or don't remember), how great it is to reel in a marlin from the ocean that's twice your size (again, not there), but to me, the window into his true personality can be observed for a few faint hours on Sundays and sometimes Mondays or Thursdays. Charger games bring out the best and worst in his emotional gamut every fall and [...] Continue reading →
Going into the 2009 season, among San Diego's running backs, we find a 5'6" spark plug who captured the nation's attention during last season's playoffs, a bulldozing rookie who accounted for over 3,000 yards in his collegiate career, and, of course, one of the best running backs and overall players ever to grace a football field. San Diego leaned more towards the passing game last season, with some observers sensing a shift in Norv Turner's playcalling. However, that might have been due to the nagging injuries sustained by Tomlinson that limited his productivity. Despite San Diego's great passing attack, a more balanced approach is definitely a proven formula for the Chargers that, if applied, should reap dividends for the team in 2009. With this in mind, what can San [...] Continue reading →
After crushing (and quick) postseason exits in 2004 and 2006, the Chargers fired coach Marty Schottenheimer and replaced him with Norv Turner. A shock for many, San Diego's sedevacante was filled with Turner despite the fact that sexier names such as Bill Cowher and Bill Parcells were available during the off-season. Turner, who had installed the Chargers current offensive system in 2001—his lone year as San Diego's offensive coordinator—had since departed to take several jobs, most notably the head coaching position at Oakland where he went a dismal 9-23 over two seasons. In 2007,  upon taking the job in San Diego, Turner made good on fulfilling the first objective: winning in the playoffs. Turner's first season featured two postseason wins, including an [...] Continue reading →
San Diego Chargers 30, New England Patriots 10 Did the Patriots really call timeout with :02 left in this game? Pathetic. Looks like Belichick runs up the scoring even when he’s losing. Or would that actually be called running down the score? San Diego’s defense was spectacular Sunday night, particularly Jamal Williams up front and Quintin [...] Continue reading →
