Kurt Warner

Another San Francisco 49er nemesis has retired. The 49er faithful hope this one stays retired. If he does, the NFC West will be wide open in 2010. Early Friday afternoon, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner officially hung up his cleats after a 12-year career that includes two MVPs and three Super Bowl appearances including one Super Bowl ring. Two of the three teams (and the two that saw him lead them to the Super Bowl) Warner played for were division foes of the 49ers. Warner first torched the 49ers as a member of the St. Louis Rams and the "Greatest Show on Turf" and then after a dismal stint with the New York Giants, returned to the NFC West as a member of the Cardinals and decimated the [...] Continue reading →
In the NBA you have Kobe or LeBron. In the NHL you have Crosby vs Ovechkin. For the most part in the NFL it's always been Brady vs Manning deciding who's the best quarterback in the NFL. I decided to go beyond the usual comparison of who is the best quarterback in the NFL right now with Manning and Brady. I decided to compare two forty year old quarterbacks who've been making "comebacks" for three years now. Warner with Arizona and Favre with Green Bay, NY Jets and most recently Minnesota. I've never heard someone compare Brett Favre and Kurt Warner so I decided to be the first and even [...] Continue reading →
Who would you rather the Saints face this Saturday? A team that has given up 14 points in the past 3 games or the defense that gave up 45 points in their last game? The Dallas Cowboys are on fire right now, where as the Cardinals defense has been so much 'bark' than 'bite'. You know who does the trash talking for the Cardinals....the defense, if there was a side of the ball that should be keeping their mouths shut this week it would be and should be the Cardinals defense. Have you heard the reports that Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle said [paraphrased] that he would rather face Drew Brees over Aaron Rodgers.......WHAAAAAAAT??? All Rodgers' did was light you up for 45 points....35 of the points coming in half way through the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th quarter...at home [...] Continue reading →
Minnesota hosts the New York Giants in an early Sunday game, and the outcome will dictate the Arizona Cardinals' game plan for their later game slot against the Green Bay Packers. If the Vikings win the Cardinals will surely fall back on plan B, which will be to rest key players and keep the game plan as plain as Breyer's vanilla bean ice cream. With the strong likelihood of facing the Packers the following week on the same field in the first round of the playoffs, it would be foolish to reveal too much to Green Bay. If the Vikings lose, the Cardinals will be gunning for the #2 NFC seed. Of course, they will [...] Continue reading →
In the most complete game Arizona has played since upending the Vikings three weeks ago, the Cardinals took care of business by ousting the undermanned Rams 31-10 to earn 10 wins for the first time since 1976. With the NFC West crown wrapped up last weekend, the Cardinals also still have an outside chance of earning the No.2 seed in the NFC playoffs should the Vikings lose their last two games. Aside from that, this game served primarily as a much needed tune-up for the playoffs after two shaky outings. The game featured several milestones: Kurt Warner became only the second QB in NFL history to pass for [...] Continue reading →
The focal point for the Cardinals will be containing Steven Jackson, who has averaged five yards per carry while topping 130 yards in each of his last three games, and is only 85 yards shy of going over 1,000 for the 5th straight season. If they can do that, stopping the Rams' passing game should be fairly easy. St. Louis has lost two of its top three receivers to IR and is now down to practice squad warriors, outside of second year wideout Donnie Avery. Marc Bulger and Kyle Boller have combined for only seven touchdown passes in nine games. Although Arizona is still ranked in the top ten against the run, they have stumbled [...] Continue reading →
The Carolina Panthers, for a day at least, looked like the Carolina Panthers of old. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combined to chew up 245 yards on the ground and the Panthers rushed for a total of 270 yards, good for second-best in franchise history. The Panthers' defense was everywhere on Sunday, proving to be equally as involved in the impressive 34-21 win as the offense. There are some wildly ironic numbers that can be found on the stat sheet from Sunday's game.  Kurt Warner, Jake Delhomme's close friend and mentor from their NFL Europe days, turned in a performance that was nearly identical to Delhomme's in last year's playoff loss to the Cardinals.  Warner completed 27 of 46 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. It starts to get weird when you look at what [...] Continue reading →
And there goes Ronnie Brown for a three-yard touchdown run! The Dolphins are up, 20-13. Brown has been looking swell against this Colts' shaky defense right now. Oh, but here comes rookie running back Donald Brown, as he breaks away for a 15-yard touchdown, his first of the season and his career! With 3:50 left in the game, Dolphins' Dan Carpenter has now hit a 45-yard field goal which may seal the deal for Miami as they lead, 23-20. Here goes the Colts, who have been completely dominated by the Fins in the time of possession and it is right now not looking good, not at all. Peyton Manning takes the snap, drops back, finds Pierrre Garcon at the screen. And look, here he goes! To the twenty, to the ten, to the five, touchdown Colts! With 3:18 left, I don't think [...] Continue reading →
Kurt Warner broke the NFL record for completion percentage for a single game, connecting on 24 of 26 passes for 243 yards and 2 TDs as the Arizona Cardinals dominated the Jacksonville Jaguars en route to a 31-17 road drubbing on Sunday. Arizona played nearly flawless football for three quarters, building a 31-3 lead the Jaguars could only begin to overcome in garbage time. Coming off of a Week 1 game that saw the Offense completely out of sync, the Warner-led Cardinals responded by putting together a balanced attack that was effective across the board. Tim Hightower had 72 yards on 15 carries and a TD, and [...] Continue reading →
Turns out Kurt Warner's preseason struggles were no mirage. In his first real game of the season he looked out of sync and off target, as the Cardinals lost to the 49ers 20-16 in their NFC Championship defending debut. Nearly half of his completions came on screen passes and check downs to Running Back Tim Hightower, who notched 12 catches for 121 yards. While this is a great fantasy stat, it is evidence the Cardinals attack was never able to find its rhythm. The 49ers found success collapsing the pocket, pressuring Warner all game long, and nullifying the medium and long passes that became a staple of their number two ranked passing attack last season. [...] Continue reading →
