Josh McDaniels

It was a classic spit take. Upon reading the news of Brady Quinn's trade to the Denver Broncos for fullback Peyton Hillis and two late round draft picks, I proceeded to soak my laptop screen in soda. It completely caught me off guard. What was surprising was not that Quinn got moved but rather where he got moved to. It was beginning to look like the Broncos were going to commit to Kyle Orton for the foreseeable future. Analysts thought the Broncos would ride Orton for a few years while head coach Josh McDaniels developed a draft pick. Not anymore. A year ago, McDaniels stirred the pot by attempting to trade then-starter Jay Cutler to acquire Matt Cassel from New England. That didn't work. Cutler got mad and was on his way to Chicago while Orton was sent to Denver. Orton had not [...] Continue reading →
Brandon Marshall is an amazing wide receiver, on the field. Marshall is coming off seasons of 102, 104 and 101 catches respectively, including back to back Pro Bowl appearances. His 6'4" 230 pound frame gives him the size to dominate opposing defenders, while his speed and hops combine to make him almost indefendable. Off the field, Marshall's story is full of enough run-ins with the law that not only brings his character into question, it shows he's an absolute liability when not suited up in a jersey and helmet. A baker's dozen of domestic disputes with girlfriends and fiances shows he thinks he's above the law and [...] Continue reading →
Josh McDaniels, you truly are a disciple of Bill Bellichick. You embody Bellichick's maverick spirit, going against the grain of conventional wisdom in order to storm your way to victory. No, wait—it's one thing to go for it on 4th-and-2 in the waning moments of the fourth quarter in order to put a game out of reach, it's another thing to try and convert an onside kick in the third quarter, down by just ten points. Really, Josh? McDaniels' brilliant coaching mind is also responsible for three failed fourth-down attempts by the Broncos. Also, why play Chris Simms right off the bat knowing full well that Kyle Orton could go if needed? Did anyone really think Simms was going to lead the [...] Continue reading →
A big late afternoon game this Sunday,  October 11 as the 4-0 Denver Broncos host the 3-1 New England Patriots at INVESCO Field at Mile High.  It is an AFL Legacy game, meaning there may be some scary colors being worn.  This is exciting; but this game has some legit notability to it.  The most obvious is that Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels was on the Patriots coaching staff under Patriots head coach Bill Belichick from 2001-2008, most recently as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.  McDaniels has seven former Patriots on his roster (RB Lamont Jordan, WR Jabar Gaffney, TE Daniel Graham, OT Brandon Gorin, G Russ Hochstein, DE Le Kevin Smith, and LS Lonie Paxton), and a major reason former Broncos QB Jay Cutler is in Chicago is former Patriots QB Matt Cassel, now in Kansas [...] Continue reading →
In the wake of his recent practice field hissy fit, Denver Broncos wide receiver may have gone far beyond anything any fan ever thought possible. In addition to losing respect from virtually every respectable NFL fan, coach, or executive, he may have lost the respect of his role models and elders on the team. When asked if he was surprised of Marshall's recent suspension, veteran wide receiver Brandon Stokley responded by saying, "Not really, not with his attitude and how he was acting," Stokley said. "Something had to be done. They made the decision. We're moving on, and hopefully in a few weeks, when he's back, he'll be ready to contribute." Hopefully. 2008 offensive co-captain and tight end Daniel Graham also weighed in on the Marshall situation. "We've had a few [...] Continue reading →
As somewhat of a response to Punkus' great article earlier, I will now give you my opinion of who will make the Denver Broncos' final roster for 2009. I will start by giving an overview of the Broncos' quarterback unit, which took a serious hit in terms of pure talent when the team traded away Pro Bowl selection Jay Cutler. As any casual sports fan knows by now, Cutler was dealt to the Chicago Bears in exchange for Kyle Orton and three draft picks. Orton has been named the starting quarterback by head coach Josh McDaniels, as expected, and will continue to compete for the job this offseason with free agent signee Chris Simms. For the Broncos, Orton will be expected to run Josh McDaniels' complex but effective offense that relies heavily on the pass.  In his time with [...] Continue reading →
A near-complete domination of the AFC West, as well as a 54-26 regular season record over the past five years, hasn't been enough for A.J. Smith or his team-the San Diego Chargers-to be exactly where he would want them. The Super Bowl. Despite San Diego's loaded roster that boasts future Hall of Famers (RB LaDainian Tomlinson), a franchise quarterback (Philip Rivers), a former Defensive Player of the Year (LB Shawne Merriman), and a myriad of All-Pros, their success has been limited to a few playoff wins and lording over a consistently weak division. Until now? A.J. Smith isn't sure. In fact, a cursory glance over a few of his comments regarding Kansas City and Denver's shift in philosophy over the off-season would seem to indicate the hard-nosed Smith is, well-quivering in [...] Continue reading →
