Derek Anderson

With the draft only 30 days and some loose change away, many are wondering what the Bills are going to do. One of those many is myself. The Bills are signing free agents at a snail's pace. Without boring you to much, the few things the Bills organization has done really has me wondering. The Bills have a new "big name coach," new GM, no T.O., uncertainty at QB, an over-paid running back, no offensive scheme or offense for that matter, a left guard who retired at the tender age of 24, a defensive end who doesn't know if he wants to retire nor will he let the franchise know, and most importantly fans who are fed up with losing. So where do they go from here? Well, first they need to be more aggressive in free agency. Signing offensive tackle, Cornell Green last week and linebacker, [...] Continue reading →
Early in the day Wednesday the Arizona Cardinals came to an agreement with free agent quarterback Derek Anderson on a two-year $7.25 million dollar contract which ended the Cardinals pursuit of restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. Charlie Whitehurst's decision came down to the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks and Whitehurst informed the Chargers front office that he wanted to be traded to Seattle. Today the Seahawks and Chargers came to trade agreement for restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. The Seahawks will send their second-round [...] Continue reading →
Well, March madness has arrived and it's not just basketball this year. This has been a really strange off-season so far. In two weeks time, there has been much to reflect on. Some expected, some just flat out mind numbing. Lets start with some of the things we all saw coming. Brett Favre hasn't decided if he's going to retire or not. No surprise there. I wouldn't expect his answer to come until August. There is no way he's going to suck it up and go through the OTAs. Even at 40 years old he's still one of the best in the game. Sure, he makes mistakes but last season proved he could limit those mistakes and give his team a serious chance at a Championship. Ironically, it was his final mistake that sealed the Vikings fate for 2009. Mike Holmgren has completely revamped the 2010 [...] Continue reading →
With Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback recently being in the news for harassment as well as other possible charges involving an incident outside Atlanta, the Rooney family is not so high on Big Ben. This is his second off the field incident (he's currently fighting a civil suit in Nevada for sexual assault) and could be willing to part with the star quarterback. The Steelers have said they would be content with current backup Dennis Dixon as the team’s starting quarterback or could acquire one via the NFL draft, but Dixon would be the more immediate choice. So who would be interested in the 28-year old quarterback? The [...] Continue reading →
The Cleveland Browns have finally released Derek Anderson. In a move that comes as a surprise to no one, Anderson is no longer a Cleveland Brown. After spending five years in Cleveland and with a pro bowl season in 2007, DA can best be described as inconsistent. Newly acquired Seneca Wallace, Brady Quinn and Brett Ratliff now make up Cleveland's quarterback roster. But for how long? Is Mike Holmgren done with his QB search or is he just beginning? Who will be the starter in 2010? Will Brady Quinn even be on the team next season? The answers to these questions will probably be revealed in the near future. Mike Holmgren brought Wallace to Cleveland in case he can't swing a trade for a starting quarterback. If he does, then Wallace can be a fine backup. If no trade is made, he will be [...] Continue reading →
The Jacksonville Jaguars still have a very faint chance of making the playoffs. Realistically though, they are done. The Cleveland Browns lost their chance about the end of October. At 7-8, the Jaguars still must come to the shores of Lake Erie on a blustery. very cold Sunday to face the 4-11 Browns. A Browns team that is playing like they are trying to lock up home field advantage for the post season. Three games ago, this looked like it would be a mismatch. Jacksonville controlled their own destiny and Cleveland controlled the first pick in the 2010 draft. Since then, the Jaguars have lost three straight and the Browns have won three in a row. Funny how quick things can change in the NFL. As always, in late season games in Cleveland, running the ball becomes extremely important. [...] Continue reading →
The Cleveland Browns defeated the Oakland Raiders 23-9 for their third straight win and have established an identity along the way. The Browns have become a running team. In wins over the Steelers, Chiefs and Raiders, the Browns have rushed for 686 in the three games, an average of just over 228 a game. Jerome Harrison has emerged as the key force in this new found rushing attack, gaining 148 yards on a team record 39 carries. Harrison who gained 286 yards last week, also ran for a 16 yard touchdown to give the Browns a 7-0 lead. Derek Anderson passed 19 yards to Mohamed Massaquoi for the other Cleveland touchdown. Cleveland took advantage of three Charlie Frye interceptions and 13 Raider penalties for 126 yards, to hold Oakland to just nine points. Cleveland turned it over just [...] Continue reading →
Both the Raiders and Browns have had forgettble seasons.  The Raiders (5-9) and the Browns (3-11) have had a quarterback battle but the Browns just put Brady Quinn on the IR so he is done for the year meaning Derek Anderson will start against the Raiders.  Charlie Frye will start after leaving the win at Denver with a concussion.  Both teams have a head coach on the hot seat.  Eric Mangini says he is not worried about Mike Holmgren and TOm Cable has said he is only thinking about football and winning right now.Through the struggles of 2009, both teams are looking to end the season with some momentum.  The Raiders are trying to win 2 in a row for the first time all year.    Charlie Frye vs. Derek Anderson:    Both quarterbacks are bench warmers looking to [...] Continue reading →
When the 3-11 Cleveland Browns host the 5-9  Oakland Raiders this week, they will do it without a valuable piece of their offense, their quarterback. While he hasn't put the team on his shoulders, Brady Quinn has done a nice job running the offense. In other word, he's been managing the games. With  Quinn being placed on IR  for the second straight season, the Browns will be lining up with Derek Anderson at quarterback this Sunday.  Quinn loses out on a golden opportunity to impress Mike Holmgren as his play so far may not be enough. While he has shown improvement since the bye week, inconsistency still plagues the third year QB. Eric Mangini has said  Anderson will now assume the starting job at QB. If I'm Mangini and I need to win these last two games, my plan is simple. Run [...] Continue reading →
It was reported that Brady Quinn will be placed on injured reserve with a foot injury ending his season with two games left. It is not certain if surgery will be needed. Quinn injured his foot on his 24 yard run near the end of last weeks game against Kansas City. While this is a big loss for the Browns and Eric Mangini, who desperately needs wins, it's an even bigger loss for Quinn. With new President Mike Holmgren now in place, Quinn needed to  have a strong finish to impress his new boss. Now all Holmgren will have is film to watch to determine if a new QB should be brought in for next year. While he has shown improvement during the course of the season, Quinn is still a work in progress and needs to improve on both accuracy and getting the ball down the field more. Another [...] Continue reading →
