2010 NFL free agency

Finally the Bears disposed of some wasted roster space. They released veteran fullback Jason McKie. The 29 year old, appeared in 71 games with 35 starts in seven seasons with the Bears. He rushed for 84 yards and 3 touchdowns on 29 carries and caught 62 passes for 344 yards and 3 TDs. McKie was known for his blocking skills more then his running ability and it has been said he that he didn’t fit Mike Martz’s scheme. Newly [...] Continue reading →
The man who supposedly took a ride to the Super Bowl with the Bears in 2006 has signed with the Washington Redskins. Grossman was used sparingly last season with the Houston Texans, backing up Pro Bowler Matt Schaub. The seven year veteran was a favorite at the beginning of his time with the Bears because of his gun-slinging [...] Continue reading →
Brady Quinn is as Irish as it gets. OK, he's not from Ireland, or even a red head, but his last name suggests Irish roots. And it doesn't end there, no it's only the beginning laddie. Aye, Quinn played in Dublin. Well, Dublin, Ohio at Dublin  Coffman High School. At Dublin High, Quinn played well enough to be listed as ESPN's No. 20 on the list of 100 top prep football players. Next up for this Irish lad was what other than Notre Dame. As the leader of the Fighting Irish, Quinn broke and set 36 Notre Dame passing records; including completions, yards per game (239.6) and touchdowns [...] Continue reading →
The second installment of the Patriots Free Agency Hindsight Report is ready for release after a significant week of movement!  Enough intro, let's get right into it here: -TE Ben Watson is officially a member of the Cleveland Browns.  No surprise that they lost him - they didn't have a lot of incentive to bring back a player that only had one season with at least 40 catches and 500 yards (2006 his third season: 49 catches, 643 yards, 3 TDs).  In fact, the Patriots faced almost the same situation in 2007 when they let 2002 first round pick TE Daniel Graham go after five seasons (none with at least 40 catches and 500 yards).  More on this later. -CB Leigh Bodden re-signed with the Patriots.  His new contract is for 4 years, $22 million, with $10 million guaranteed.  Starter's [...] Continue reading →
There are certain athletes in professional sports that establish a reputation as fan favorites among the city they play in. When the Philadelphia Eagles released Hank Baskett prior to the 2009 season, fans said goodbye to a player who provided plenty of memories during the first three years of his career. After one season with the Indianapolis Colts, Baskett will return to the team he started his career off with after signing a one-year deal with the Eagles. While he never possessed the skills as a top wideout for Philadelphia, Baskett provided the Eagles with a number of big plays over his three years [...] Continue reading →
Welcome ladies and gents to the 2010 New England Patriots offseason.  I'm happy to be back at it again, as money is getting exchanged in this uncapped free agency period.  It's been another minute since the last time you all have heard from me, and my plan is to not give you all 2,000 words.  That said, this is the time of the year where plans start getting adjusted by external factors!  I'll call these reports the Hindsight Reports because all we are going to do is look back on them and judge.  Let me catch you all up on what's been up the last couple of weeks (besides the Combine, more on that jazz later): -WR Randy Moss conceded that 2010 will most likely be his last season in New England: I think what is interesting about this is that Moss' cited the fact that New England [...] Continue reading →
The New England Patriots' 2009 season has been over for some time now, but I still wanted to bring some closure to the final four regular season games of the season and the playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens, while also keeping an eye on free agency and the draft.  Keep in mind, these grades are not reflective of the entire season, only the finish.  In my mind, the end of the season determines how a team should move forward in preparation for the next season anyway. To refresh peoples' memories: After a loss to the Dolphins at Miami dropped the Patriots to 7-5, the Patriots won three games in a row.  They broke their two game losing streak against the Carolina Panthers 20-10, won their first continental road game of the season at Buffalo 17-10, and had perhaps their most [...] Continue reading →
The Carolina Panthers have seemingly taken a 180-degree turn in their pursuit of Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers. According to his agent, Carl Carey, the Panthers have "not made a single inquiry this offseason" in regards to contract negotiations with the team's top pick in the 2002 draft. This is a complete reversal of their strategy from last year, where head coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney seemed adamant about keeping Peppers in town, eventually placing the team's franchise tag on him when negotiations for a long term contract fizzled out. Hurney made it clear that Peppers was, in the team's eyes, an absolute necessity to the team's future plans, and went so far as to answer questions from fans on a local radio show following the team's decision to place [...] Continue reading →
The Philadelphia Eagles have a handful of tasks on their agenda for the 2010 offseason. However, no task may be more important than trying to negotiate a deal to keep free agent wide receiver Jason Avant around for not only next season, but for the long run. Throughout the first three years of his career with the Eagles, Avant was the type of player whose impact seemed under the radar. He was one of the most reliable 3rd-down players in the NFL, yet never seemed to be recognized for the credit deserved. After 2009, Avant showed how important of a role he can play in the Eagles' offense and making his case to receive a long-term deal this offseason. He set [...] Continue reading →
I've been away from the game for a while, ever since I predicted that the Baltimore Ravens would end the New England Patriots' season two weeks ago.  Since then, a lot of things have gone down in the league, some of them related to the Patriots: *QB Tom Brady and WR Randy Moss pulling out of the Pro Bowl due to injury.  Which pretty much confirmed what we already knew, that the Patriots just didn't have much left at the end of the season... *Questions surrounding the future of Patriots RBs Kevin Faulk and Fred Taylor.  Both are over 30, and with the shaky production of RB Laurence Maroney after four seasons, there will be some shake-up.  There is no way the Patriots are bringing back the same five running backs. *Starting RG Stephen Neal is contemplating retirement.  The [...] Continue reading →
