Star Studded Saints Week 6 vs the NY Giants
The Saints stay undefeated…YaHOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Completely pushing the New York Giants around this past Sunday in the Super Dome 48-27. The Saints (5-0) used their bye week from week 5 and had an excellent game plan prepared to make a Giants team - thought to be one of the contenders in the whole NFL, appear to be pretenders against the Saints. The Saints were running on full cylinder and now should start to receive more of the spotlight when the talk swings to legitimate title contenders.
Lets get right into the Star Studded Saints from Week 6…
Drew Brees quarterbacked a perfect game….even his quarterback rating was near perfect (however the heck that thing is tabulated). Brees threw for 367 yards against a fierce Giants defense. Brees also completed 23 of 30 passes, four of which were for touchdowns…with no interceptions. Brees was also able to complete the pass to seven different receivers. I was happy to see him through for a touchdown pass - something Brees had not done since week 2. Very impressive performance to say the least.
One of the biggest reasons why Brees was able to be so effective against the Giants was because of his great support by the Saints offensive line. The Giants has some of the best pass rushers in the game with Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora at the top of their game. The Offensive Line only gave up 1 sack and three hits to the quarterback. Given the amount of plays in a game the line with-stood a ton of pressure and showed us why the Saints are one of the top rushing and passing offensives in the NFL. The Offensive line also blocks and created holes for the running backs of the Saints to pile on a 133 yards on the New York Giant defense.
Next I need to give some props to the star of the running backs, the Saints very own PT Bruiser. It is officially alright to give him that nickname - I was skeptical at first because of the opposing defenses that the Saints have faced, but Pierre Thomas showed every one watching that he has toughness and muscles about him rushing 15 times for 72 yards. You may be thinking why would someone who didn’t even get 80 yards be worthy of a Star? Well when the play calling only had him rushing the ball 15 times that equates to a 4.8 yard average run per carry. And yes I know he did not score - but part of being a good teammate and wanting what is best for the team is taking what the defense is giving you. Yes, the could have kept pounding the rock steadily and effectively against the Giants but Brees and the Saints staff saw holes they wanted to exploit in the Giants secondary.
Marques Colston - was HUGE!!! Colston was targeted eight times by Brees and every time he looked for him, Colston came through snagging down all eight throws from Brees and burning the defense for 166 yards (over a 20 yard average per catch…WOW), and hauling in one of those catches for a touchdown. Colston stretched the defense as far as he could while in the confides of the grid iron. Could not ask for a better performance from your number 1 wide receiver.
Not to be completely out done was Lance Moore - who had been somewhat nonexistent thus far into the season - compared to his monstrous season last year with all the Saints’ injured wideouts - Moore stepped up last year - and displayed his full array of talent on the field last week against the Giants, hauling in six catches for 78 yards and getting one touchdown! Brees targeted him 7 times and Moore did his best to bring down every pass Brees through his way…especially the pass that went in between two Giant defenders with one of them getting a hand on it - Moore had the great concentration to stay with the play and catch the ball.
Tight End Jeremy Shockey was on a mission last week to make sure his former team regretted trading him. Shockey was so intense throughout the game - it was awesome to see his emotion….no need to light a match, Shockey was already burning up. Brees targeted him 5 times and hauling in four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown. Shockey’s emotion was evident and I believe really carried over to the rest of the team….extra motivation to kick the Giants’ butts all the way back to the big apple.
Roman Harper has been playing great football for the Saints’ secondary over the past month. This past week against the Giants he acquired 5 tackles, four being solo, 1 sack and 1 pass deflection. For Harper to get a pass deflection then a sack shows me if I hadn’t watched the game that he was playing all over the field and then you add on those four solo tackles he was making plays all days for the Saints and more importantly stopping the Giants’ weapons from firing on all cylinders.
Jabari Greer - again in the secondary for the Saints - had a great game. Accounting for 5 tackles (all solo) as well as two pass deflections and one interception. Greer is definitely putting the time in practice because he is able to make that extra reach or stretch just enough to break plays up. I really like the way Greer has been playing, fast motor, good vision, reads the quarterback’s eyes well. Able to get that split second head start on tackling a receiver or intercepting a pass.
Lastly, Courtney Roby…handled the kick returns for the Saints last week. Roby did an excellent job return kick offs getting an average of just under 23 yards per return for the Saints. His efforts along with the rest of the kick return team really helped the Saints offense get better field position and thus put in better opportunities to score as he returned 4 kick offs for a total of 91 yards.
Adding these to last weeks totals here are the standing for the Star Studded Saints through week 6….
