Seahawks targeting Broncos WR Brandon Marshall?

First off this is just a rumor, thought up three weeks ago by ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando. Sando, who is a good friend of mine, suggested that the Seahawks could package one of their top three draft selections in the 2010 NFL draft as well as Deion Branch, who has underperformed in Seattle to the Denver Broncos in exchange for the standout Brandon Marshall, who is a restricted free agent this off season.
Sando does bring up a good point about shipping Branch and one of the Seahawks first three picks off to Denver for Marshall however since the hiring of former USC head coach Pete Carroll and Jeremy Bates as the offensive coordinator the idea of Brandon Marshall in Seattle has gotten more and more attention.
However there are a lot of things that need to happen first before there is even a chance for the Seahawks to speak with the Broncos about Brandon Marshall.
First the Seahawks need to hire a general manager to officially replace Tim Ruskell who was forced to resign in December of 2009. The leading candidate is former Tennessee Titans GM Floyd Reese who has worked with Pete Carroll in the past.
Second the Denver Broncos have to tender a contract to Marshall, probably in the neighborhood of $9 million. After they have offered Marshall a contract tender then the Broncos, if they decided to want to move Marshall could then start looking for trade partners.
Third the Broncos would have to work out the right package to make a deal work because the NFL business is not Madden 2010.
The Seahawks currently hold the No. 6, No. 14 and No. 40 overall picks in the draft, one of which, the 14th overall pick belonging to the Broncos. I don’t see the Seahawks trading Denver back their first round pick but the two teams could work out a draft pick swap.
There are a few interesting notes to include about this Brandon Marshall Seahawks topic.
- WR TJ Houshmandzadeh called Brandon Marshall after Pete Carroll hired offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates and when TJ asked Brandon about Jeremy Bates he said “You will love the guy”. So Bates and Marshall have a connection going back a few years when Bates was the offensive coordinator in Denver.
- Marshall worked with offensive coordinator Jermey Bates and possibly Jedd Fisch as the quarterbacks coach so there is some history with some of Carroll’s guys and Brandon Marshall.
Now I do need to note that there are at least obsticals the Seahakws have before anyone can mention a Brandon Marshall to Seattle rumor
One, the Seattle Seahawks NEED to select a new general manager to assist Pete Carroll and make the transactions go through for the Seahawks. Pete Carroll is not the GM, he is the executive vice president of football operations and head coach. No moves can be made involving player movement without a GM.
Two, the collective bargaining agreement needs to be situated one way or another because it will effect Brandon Marshall’s status as a free agent. If there is a new CBA in place before the deadline then Marshall becomes an unrestricted free agent and unless the Broncos decide to franchise tag him the Seahawks won’t have to make a trade for Marshall. If there is not a new CBA in place then Marshall becomes a restricted free agent because he has not played six years in the NFL. So then the Seahawks would have to match the tender offer and work out a trade with the Broncos IF the Seahawks decided that they want to pursue Brandon Marshall.
Three, depending on what happens after the CBA deadline the Seahawks still have to create the right package to offer the Broncos. It will not be Branch and a mid round pick for Marshall because that wouldn’t even work in a fantasy league.
So there is A LOT that has to happen between now and the time the Seahawks could possibly be thinking about having Brandon Marshall dawning Seahawks blue.
So this should put a stop to the Brandon Marshall Seahawks rumors until the Seahawks have hired a new GM and the NFL collective bargening agreement has been sorted out.

I don’t think the seahawks will part with thier two number one’s. However I could see a trade involving one of their starting linebackers, either Lofa Tutupu or Leroy Hill for Marshal. Maybe even throw in Deon Branch. The seahawks are loaded at linebackers and Denver needs defensive help.
I see Seattle trading Deion Branch and the 40th overall pick for Brandon Marshall. Deion Branch has worked with McDaniels while in New England. I say get all the Gm hiring done, wait on the CBA and get Brandon Marshall on board! If he shuts his mouth, he is a guaranteed Pro bowler! Moving Housh to the slot and having Burleson/Marshall on the outsides would not only make the Seahawks more threatening then the trio in Arizona (Fitz/Boldin/Breaston), it would definately help the running game!
John: Well don’t see them doing that either which is why i said one of their three first picks. And yea I could see a Hill+Branch+2nd round pick for Marshall and pick.
Patrick: Yea I actually wen on 950 KJR Seattle and threw out that idea. But I don’t think that would get the entire deal however Seattle has a few players to pick from.
Branch, Hill, Hawthorne(not likely but still possible), Burleson(FA).
I might think a Hill, Branch and 2nd rounder for Marshall and a 3rd rounder would be fair.
Burleson is a free agent.
Marshall, Butler, Housh+ Carlson would be the best possible weapons.
Lars: Good analysis… I wonder what will happen with Burleson…
Have you heard much about Hasselbeck? I know Carroll has said he wants to stick with him, but I’ve also heard there is an interest for him in Cleveland and I’m interested to see what he would be dealt for.
I hope we don’t take Bradford/Clausen with the #6 pick. I am interested in seeing Teel get some more playing time. He could be the future in Seattle if given the opportunity.
Seattle needs O-line help bad… No matter who the QB is, they aren’t gonna look good. I’ve heard Spiller is someone the Hawks are looking at. I think he fits the mold of a Chris Johnson/Darren Sproles. I kinda wish Forsett would get more of a chance to prove himself.
Thanks Patrick. I’m not sure he will be resigned. He finished the season injured and Deon Butler is a better and younger version of Burleson. Not much recently. Carroll endorsed him, Holmgren might target him.
Well I have talked with a few people and I’ve come to the realization that Carroll will want Hasselbeck, and or Jimmy CLausen. I’m coming out with my second mock draft and I have clausen going to the Seahawks. Now he also might not make it to seatttle if St Louis takes him because then Washington would take Bradford and seattle is stuck with nothing. Teel, I have supported but in Pete Carrolls offense Hasselbeck and Clausen only fit.
Well I do think Walter Jones has at least one or more season in him. Rob Sims is only a RG. Max Unger will be a great C and Locklear is soooooooo much better at RT then LT. I might see the Seahawks going for a top LG like Logan Mankins in FA.
Spiller in my mind is the next Alexander. A great running back with the Seahawks organization who never was noticed until the SB. I agree on Forsett.
Nate B has been injurt riddled his entire time with Seattle, just like Deion Branch… I agree, Deon Butler is a faster, smaller version of NB.
Wouldn’t it be crazy id Hasselbeck for Quinn? lol
Quinn and Clausen come from the same mold, although I feel Clausen has much more poise than Quinn.
It would be great if Walter lasted another year. In a blessing, him pretty much having the year off should’ve given him time to rest, rehab and that’s a year of beating his body didn’t go through. My only fear is that it would be like C. Palmer or T. Brady even for that matter, that shaking rust can be difficult. He has taken a beating for so long! I think there are some tackles that could go in the 4-6th rds, sit/observe and be future starters.
Spiller could be great or a bust… I think it’s all about the system and the line… I have felt and feel Forsett has the skills, speed, awareness and abilities to be great if given the chance. He had two great rushing games against to crappy defenses this year, but he also had a pretty good multi purpose game against the Vikes.
I don’t see getting rid of their linebackers a good move. Since Hawthorn isnt implemented that much he could go along with branch and maybe a second rounder but if they dont bite on that then i say leave him. The Hawks can get a solid safety and a defensive end in the first round to complete their defense and then maybe find a offensive tackle on free agency. Marshall would be a nice addition but not at the cost of our first round picks or linebackers.
My take on Burleson well he had a pretty good year last year and would fit in the system as a Steve Breaston type. He lead the team in catchs this last year so I don’t know he is worth getting rid of. Of course his success was based on how long Hasselbeck could stay on his feet but that’s the story of their whole offense! In reality the fall of this team was the loss of Steve Hutchinson and the retirment of Mack Strong! Those two made our running game! Not Alexander! Not to mention they gave Hasselbeck alot of time to throw! Hutchenson is going to another probowl with the Vikings this year!
Alot of people say you have to have a franchise quarterback to make the superbowl but if you ask me its the O line and the defense! Trent Dilfer wasnt a great quarterback and he got a superbowl ring! Brad Johnson wasn’t great either and he won with the Bucs! The Jets are making it with a rookie QB and the Ravens got pretty far with Flaco doing little or nothing! A good offensive line can make a quarterback and running back look good! Add a solid defense into the mix and you got yourself a playoff run! Everyone always wants to blame the quarterback or the running backs but in essence its all about the O line! Unless your Deon Sanders or something! Imagine the damage Forsett could do with good blocking! Another example here is Clinton Portis. He had great blocking in Denver but went down hill in Washington without the blocking. The games are won in the trench’s!
Patrick: Yea well Nate has done better than Branch overall in Seattle. Butler is better than both. Don’t listen to the Hasselbeck rumors. Especially from the Bleacher Report site. I’ve read articles over there and they aren’t worth more than the National enquire. Seattle needs a OL before a RB like Spiller because I believe in Forsett.
Steve: Hawthorne has a chance to stay but Hill could be moved with Branch because Denver NEEDS a linebacker and Branch was with McDaniels in NE so throw in a second rounder and it would be worth it. Well I see Deon Butler as a Steve Breaston and Burleson and Branch can move on IF we can get Marshall. Hutch is automatic to the PB every year. Well you need an OL, great RB and a top notch defense in order not to have that franchise starting QB.
Lars: You find the Bleacher Report laughable as well? I was a little interested to hear what they had to say about Hasselbeck and what he might be worth. They have some “decent” logic to some of their trade rumors, but this ain’t fantasy football.
They even have an article about R. Bush coming to Seattle. What do you think about that? I know there are some FA RBs out there such as M. Bell (NO) and L. White (TEN) that I think SEA could go after and not spend tons of money like they would with Bush.
What do you think?
Well for a few of those guys in the Seahawks section yes. Some of their stuff is actually good reads like Seattle Times writer Chris Cluff and Matt R. But whatever that kids name, andy auger I think, never has logical articles. He’s using Madden 2010 in his lastest reason to acquire Brandon Marshall as well as some other moves for other teams. So I don’t take his stuff seriously.
Well Reggie to Seattle, I know the writer and actually like his thinking but it’s going to be hard with Bush now doing well in the playoffs and also he’s still got that contract.
For me Seattle get’s one blockbuster trade. Here’s a list.
RB Reggie Bush
WR Brandon Marshall
CB Nnamdi Asamougha (it’s possible knowing the Raiders)
QB Matt Leinart
only one we can get
I figured there was a team of people, some good/some bad.
Out of the 4 blockbuster trades you listed, B Marshall still is the most logical and affordable.
Bush: Doing great in the playoffs and will be super expensive. I still am set on Justin Forsett doing big things! I feel they are fairly similar, therefore we wouldn’t need to spend the money on Reggie.
Marshall: The CBA would now be the hold up. As we’ve said in the past, Branch, 2nd rounder and possibly a LB could set the mood for Denver. The potential to have him thrive in this offense is endless and I feel Carroll would keep him in check.
Asamougha: Most likely have to give a 1st rd pick up! Maybe a deal with Kerney and our 2nd rd pick to them. OAK is where great players go to die isn’t it?
Leinart: Depending on Warner, Leinart could be the starter in AZ and isn’t a free agent. Compensation could be negotiated knowing the holes AZ will have; but being a division rival, and the fact they’ve won the NFC West 2 years in a row, I couldn’t see us do anything to help them.
Yea Marshall is also the most likely. Well the CBA will hold a lot of things up. Like who the Seahawks draft and who they can get to fill some holes in FA.
Nnamid I would like a 1st round swap of picks if Clausen and Bradford are gone. Swap maybe 6th and a player like Kerney or Hill for their 1st rounder and Asamougha.
Leinart is the least likely because of Warner.
It’d be crazy if we landed Marshall and Asamougha… I say ship Branch, the 2nd rd pick and Hill/Kerney to DEN for Marshall and a 3rd rd pick… Our #6 pick and Kerney/Hill (The one who didn’t go in the Marshall deal) for #8 and Asamougha. That’s just Fantasy Football-type dreaming!
I’ve got high hopes for landing Marshall! A Pro bowler that would slide right in, get rid of someone like D. Branch (who would also workout for their team).
Do you think it even possible for OAK to give up Asamougha & #8 to move up 2 spots in the draft to #6 and Kerney? It would fill a huge need in SEA, and also save the Hawks some money on the draft pick they get at #8. That open up some more money for a FA!
Patrick yea crazy would be a good word but if somone told me the Mariners would get Chone Figgins, Cliff Lee and resign Felix Heranandez for under 100 million i’d say your crazy.
I think we can get one of the two. Not both. Asamougha might be worth it though with Butler and Burleson along with TJ at WR.
I think to get Nnamdi it would be 14th overall, a player like Hill or Kerney and maybe someone else or both players for Nnamdi and a 2nd round pick. He’s an elite CB.
Well it all depends on the CBA for FA
Well ya never know what can happen between now and draft day! Theres still alot of speculation around the campfire but Im pretty excited cause Seattle has alot of options this year and it looks like they are planning to make some big moves! Too bad the Hawks couldnt get Suh! Too bad he is going so high in the draft.
So do you consider Thomas Jones a top notch running back? He’s ok but not a star and the Jets are one game from the superbowl. Stick him in Cleavland and see how well he does!
Steve: Yea I think the Seahawks are joining the rest of Seattle’s sports teams and deciding to become a winning franchise. M’s, Sounders, Huskies etc. Seattle has a lot of options. Well if anyone has any questions about stuff they hear just email me at lars.hanson@hotmail.com. And I will tell you if it’s true or bogus. Stuff from Andy Auger or B/R is usually bogus if they say it will happen. Chris Cluff is the only real writer on B/R in the Seattle section.
Well Suh would be great. I consider Thomas Jones like LT, big name RB who is still good but should hang it up because of age and lack of production. Well Jerome Harrison is in cleveland.
Asomugha is going to be one of the most sought after DBs this offseason. He was franchised last year wasn’t he? He would be a tremendous addition to the team. I don’t see many CBs coming out worth drafting, and none that could change a team like Nnamdi. I think SEA could benefit from him more than Marshall.
Patrick: Nnamdi will be looked at by a few teams probably 3-4. No he signed a 3 year 45.5 million dollar contract last Febuary. Joe Haden would be GREAT at 14th overall if he fall’s. He’s much like Darrell Revis, a great cover corner. SEA can benefit from anyone right now
You’ve got Haden to SF at #17. I also see you think SEA could take him possibly. Do you see any other teams that could put a kink in the plans?
Yea well Seattle is a possibility as well Cleveland (7), Jacksonville (10), Denver (11) and 3-4 other teams
Lars: I appreciate your knowledge, logic and your opinions. Keep writing the good stuff and I’ll keep reading it. I’ve read several articles over the past couple of weeks and a lot of them are laughable… Keep up the great work!
laughable? and thanks for the props I plan on it
Sorry about the confusion. The Bleacher Report and Pro Sports Daily are pretty very laughable!
I meant other people… Not yours! Lars, you’re awesome!
Naw it’s all good I just had to ask because I don’t think I’ve had someone say I’ve got great work and then say it’s laughable haha so I wanted to clear that up.
Yea well PSD has B/R articles so I never read them unless someone asks me about them. Thanks Patrick.
I was just reading up on Burelsons contract being up and it looks like he really wants to stay in Seattle! I really like that. It sounds like he really wants to be apart of putting together a winning team in Seattle so Im not to sure I’m on board for trading him or letting him go. Theres alot to be said for team chemistry!
Steve: Yea Nate’s contract is up this off season and I’m not so sure he will stay considering the fact that Deon Butler is in the wings and really could become an 800+ yard receiver if given the 16 games to start. Butler’s younger and not injury prone.
Saying someone isnt injury prone is a pretty broad statement considering you could say that about anyone who hasnt been injured yet. So if Butler gets an injury next season does it make him injury prone and less valuable? You can say Hasselbeck is injury prone too but noone blocks for him! We’ll see if Butler turns out. You may be right. Then again he could turn out to be a dud. All depends on the moves their gonna make. Im just saying that Nate sounds like a team player and played pretty well last season. If the hawks start getting rid of players like that then whats in store for the franchise? I really hate it when people down grade players just by their age. If you take care of yourself then age is really just a number. Jerry Rice played till he was 41 and contributed to all the teams he played with. Brett Favre and Curt Warner are proving older guys can do it too. Here’s the stat difference between Butler and Burelson. Butler was targeted 42 times and caught 15 of them and dropped 4. This means he caught a measly 35.7 percent of his catch’s. Burelson was targeted 103 times and caught 63 of them. He also only dropped 4 passes but caught a much great 61.2 percent of his catchs. He is only 28 years old and although he sat out the last 3 games do to injury he finished with 812 yards recieving. He lead the way for the team in 2009 so to me he’s earned his keep. But hey you say he’ll be let go and there isnt much of us can say or do. It’ll just happen. But now you know where Im coming from with this!
Steve: Well it’s not a broad statement when it’s about Nate and other players. Nate’s missed at least 4 games each season including a torn ACL in 2008. No because Butler doesn’t have any history of injury. I have an article coming up comparing Favre and Warner’s career.
Well I looked at Burelsons injury history and your right. He does tend to be suseptable I’ll give you that. However Deon Butler doesnt sund like the best answer just by looking at his stats his numbers arnt impressive to me. I understand he wasnt targeted as much but his catch percentage was half that of Burleson and with the same amount of drops as Burelson in less than half the attemps to catch. I wasnt blown away is what Im saying. You made it sound like he is going to be the next steve breaston but Im not feeling that optomism just yet!
Steve: yea Nate does and Deon is the most explosive receiver we have and ran the fastest 40 time with like 4.24 being his fastest. He runs an easy 4.31 40. Deon was hardly targeted at all in 2009.
Butler was targeted about 18 times, he had 15 receptions for 175 yards and an 11.7 avg.
Nate was targeted about 70 times, with 69 receptions, 812 yards, 3 TD’s and a 12.9 avg.
18-70 is a huge difference. Give Deon the same about of games and starts and he’d be better than steve breaston
Im a little confused here. You talking about Deon Branch or Butler? Butler was targeted 45 times with 15 catches and 4 drops. I dont care what his 40 time is if he cant catch. He wmight make a good kick returner though. Im not making this up. Ive researched all these stats and Butler was targeted 45 times. Not 18. Your stats cant be right either cause it doesnt allow for his 4 drops!
Ok I was off by 3. He was targeted 42 times. If you really think about what you just wrote to me you’d know that he was targeted more than 18 times cause you yourself wrote that his average was only 11.7 percent. However your totally wrong about Burelsons average which is 61 percent. Its not rocket science to figure out that 60 catchs out of 100 targets is 60 percent. If Butler actually had caught 15 outta 18 his ave woulda be close to 90 percent but we all know that it wasnt. 42 targets and 15 catches making it 11.7 percent. Here is the sight so you can see for yourself! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/9355/ Ya cant dispute facts! Butler may have been a college stud but has yet to prove himself in the NFL.
Steve: I’m trying to figure out where you are getting Butler’s stats. 45 targets, 15 catches and 4 drops? Where’s the remaining 26 targets? I’m talking Butler.
I don’t see how he was targeted 45 times. He barely played. It’s 19 targets. 15 receptions and 4 drops. not 45 targets because matt didnt airmail it 26 times over Butler
Im starting to wonder about your math? You also said that Nate was targeted 70 times with 69 receptions! Thats near perfect and yet you said his season ave was only 12.9 percent! It woulda been more like 99 percent. The actualy stats are that he was target 103 times and caught 63 of them. Its a 61.3 percent ave. Its clearly evedint what the numbers are! Bureson was on my fantasy team so I should know as well as anyone what he did on the year!
Butler has yet to have been given a full chance in the NFL he’s a rookie this season. Yes and either way you look at it Steve Breaston has a 38 year old HOF QB throwing to him along wiht Fitz and Boldin infront of him. Butler is a rookie, breston is a 4 year pro.
He’s going to get his shot with Carroll
Yea and I wasnt going into deep stats, however if I wanted to I would have done so. Either way the point I’m still trying to make is that Butler is going to be a good NFL WR.
Lars: I saw that B Marshall did an interview yesterday and said “This offseason I’m just going to go with the flow and just go in whatever direction the Broncos want to go.” Do you think there is a chance the Broncos keep him?
Paick: Well the Broncos don’t have to trade him at all and they will have to get a package they want in order to trade him. Think about the fact that they got 2 first round picks for Cutler they will want a first for Marshall at least.
Seattle might be better off looking at Miles Austin, actually I like that Idea
Lars: I got ya. I know they’re not happy with him and the Bromance rollercoaster between Marshall and McDaniels could be a distraction for the entire team. It would help us and we have players that’d help them. Very talented, but very troubled! Who knows…
I think MIles Austin would be an awesome addition… Something about the “I show up, play football and not run my mouth” mentallity he brings to the game is respectful, not to mention admirable standing next to his stat line! I just saw something about a possible trade involving T. Choice for A. Cromartie straight up… Dallas is stacked at RB and with Austin being the cornerstone of their WR corp, I think it’d be hard to get him!
