Seahawks considering Mike Shanahan for GM?

090103mikeshanahan_v1000_widecLast week I talked about the possible general manager replacements for the Seattle Seahawks after Tim Ruskell resigned with only three months left on his contract. That list included former Seahawks head coach and GM Mike Holmgren,  former Seahawks GM Randy Mueller, current Eagles GM Tom Heckert and current Steelers GM Kevin Colbert.

Now that the Cleaveland Browns, led by owner Randy Lerner are putting on the “full court press” to have Mike Holmgren become their football operations “Czar”. Looking at the situation in Cleavland it looks like a job that Holmgren would love to take on. A talented young QB in Brady Quinn and an underrated defense which could become the base of the Browns rebuild should Holmgren decide so. Plus having a top two draft pick always helps smoothen things out.

So subtract Holmgren from the list but at the same time the Seahawks could be adding to their list for possible general managers. Former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan could be added into the mix according to recent reports.

However the Buffalo Bills reached out to Shanahan a few weeks ago in an effort for him to become their next head coach. However he would only become the head coach and not the GM.

The Seahawks have one of the most respectable owners in all of football in Paul Allen. When Allen set out in 1999 to find the next Seahawks head coach the first man he looked at was Mike Holmgren. At the time Allen knew that Holmgren would be able to turn around the Seahawks franchise and he was willing to do anything to make that happen.

That’s just what Allen did when he signed Mike Holmgren to an eight year, $32 million dollar contract to become the Seahawks head coach and EVP/GM.

The same thing could happen here with another proven winner in Shanahan. He led the Broncos to back to back Super Bowl titles in 97 and 98. In his first three years with the Broncos 46-10, an NFL record for a three year span.

Paul Allen could throw six years and roughly $34-$38 million at Shanahan to become the Seahawks head coach and GM and save Allen the trouble of having to find a replacement head coach because Mora will definitely won’t be retained if the Seahawks hire a new GM no matter what Tod Leiweke dreams.

Now some guidlines that Shanahan has layed out are that he wants the chance to either draft his own young QB or already have an elite successful QB in the current teams fold. Well for the Seahawks it would be hello Jimmy Clausen. Also Shanahan wants almost 100 percent control over the roster decisions, something Holmgren had when he was the GM/HC.

Why not give the ropes over to Shanahan. He knows how to build a winning team, bring in the right coaches and players around him and most of all he knows how to be a head football coach in the NFL.

Jim Mora Jr. has never been an “NFL head coach”. He’s been a great position coach and when he was originally hired as the secondary coach and assistant head coach the secondary was unbelievable compared to what had transpired the year before.

However Shanahan is 146-98 in his career and Mora is 32-31. A considerable difference between the two coaches.

So the only problem is Tod Leiweke said he’s going to sit on his hands and have a long hard look to find the Seahawks next GM and or head coach.

Well Holmgren has his own time table and depending on how many offers Shanahan gets the Seahawks could be looking at a three or four year rebuild with a similar type of Gm like Ruskell.

Shanahan didn’t do well when he was burdened with GM duties in Denver….he’s better off striclty as a coach. But it’s certainly worth taking a shot with the guy. If he did come in, Mora is gone. Mora, by the way, wasn’t a bad coach in Atlanta. He had that team just one game from the Super Bowl at one point.

Well he got Cutler and a lot of good pieces for the current Broncos team. Yea well he’s worth an interview for sure. Mora needs to go no matter what. He’s turned the Hawks into a laughing stock. I compare him to former 1 year M’s manager John McLaren. Thinks he has what it takes but he’s not even close. He had 1 good season in atlanta and then missed the playoffs the next 2 years. he only lasted 3 yrs in Atlanta. That says something.
