Saints Show Up, Cards get Clipped
45-14 Saints WIN!!!
If you were a casual fan watching the game you would have been sorely disappointed in the game that took place at the Super Dome last weekend because of the lop-sided finished. But, if you were a a Saints fan the game was better than a warm beignet from Cafe Du Monde. After the Cardinals first offensive position (one run for 70 yards into the end zone) the Saints were in complete control.
It was a whole team effort.
Their defense did exactly what it has done all season long: hold the opposing offense a couple of times, play opportunistic defense, make big plays, and cease their opportunities.
The offense was led by-their seemingly perennial MVP candidate-quarterback Drew Brees who had another great day at the office. Brees was diffently prepared for the Cardinals defense (or lack there of). He threw 3 touchdowns to ZERO interceptions. Connecting with 6 different reciever each whom obtained at least two catches, showing again that he is a master at facilitating the ball around to the different play makers on offense.
The receivers did their job. Colston came down with six catches, Henderson wrangled down four long ball catches - one of which went for 44 yards, and Shockey only had 3 catches but led the team with firey emotion on the field. All three recievers caught a ball for a touchdown.
The running backs were one of the best parts of the day. One back was an unsung hero and the other added to his high light reel. Pierre Thomas, did not have any flashy runs like his partner in the backfield did, but he ran the ball 13 times for 52 yards (4.0 yard per carry average), caught 4 passes for 18 yards, and picked up a handful of Cardinals’ blitzer during the course of thegame so that Brees could set his feet to fire that ball through his rocket arm to the reciever. Thomas did all the things you want a runningback to do. Great job Pierre!!!
And now to the show stopper…Reggie Bush picked an interesting time to have his 2009-2010 debut. Maybe his knee is finally recovered, maybe it just goes to show how bad the Cardinals’ defense truly is, maybe it was a combination of events…all I know is that there was a run, where Bush did not score a touchdown but he had the ball on the sideline and instead of bouncing out of bounds he met the defender head on and knocked the defender back. Way to go Reggie! Now for the stats he had to back up this big game: 217 all purpose yards, 109 yard from 3 punt returns -with one going for a 83 yard touchdown, 24 yards on 4 catches where he was targetted 5 times by Brees (great ratio), and very impressive 84 yards rushing from 5 carries - one sick and ridiculous carry he took 43 yards straight into the highlight reel aka touchdown!
The Saints were well coached and well prepared!
Great job Saints fans for making the Super Dome one hell of a home field advantage.
More to come!
As always….GO Saints!
