Ravens 48, Lions 3: Report Card

December 14, 2009 by |

Today, the Ravens, to put it lightly, destroyed the Detroit Lions. In a 48-3 victory, they ran for over 300 yards, and four different players ran for scores.

Both QB Joe Flacco (3,000 yards) and RB Ray Rice (1,000 yards) reached personal milestones, and with a Ravens win and Jaguars loss, the Ravens are right in the thick of things for the No. 6 seed in the playoffs.

Let’s give out some grades.

Quarterback: B

Flacco did a nice job rebounding from his debacle in Green Bay (arguably the worst game of his career). Against a vaunted Detroit Lions defense (sarcasm, of course), Flacco played the role of a game manager, which he does very well.

Game stats: 13-of-20, 230 yards, 1 TD

Season stats: 270-of-426, 3,111 yards, 15 TD, 11 INT

Running Back: A

All three backs did a great job, especially Rice. He ran for 166 yards, and he only needed 13 attempts to do it. Willis McGahee even had a big game with 76 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries. Le’Ron McClain (2008 All-Pro) also had another great game opening holes and even ran the ball well.

Game stats: 13 att., 166 yards, 1 TD (Ray Rice), 12 att., 76 yards, 2 TD (Willis McGahee), 6 att., 32 yards, 1 TD (Le’Ron McClain).

Season stats: 194 att., 1,041 yards, 7 TD (Ray Rice), 87 att., 351 yards, 9 TD (Willis McGahee), 36 att., 152 yards, 2 TD (Le’Ron McClain).

Wide Receiver/Tight End: B

Like Flacco, the receivers didn’t have to do much, being that the running game was so dominant. But Derrick Mason had a good game with six catches and a long touchdown, and Todd Heap had one big catch before leaving with an injury. Demetrius Williams was a surprise as well. They did what they had to do. Kelley Washington started for Mark Clayton but didn’t get many opportunities.

Game stats: 6 rec., 94 yards, 1 TD (Derrick Mason), 2 rec., 45 yards (Demetrius Williams), 2 rec., 38 yards (Todd Heap).

Season stats: 60 rec., 841 yards, 6 TD (Derrick Mason), 31 rec., 397 yards, 2 TD (Kelley Washington), 44 rec., 460 yards, 2 TD (Todd Heap), 3 rec., 62 yards (Demetrius Williams).

Offensive Line: A

Left tackle Jared Gaither was a late scratch, so the Ravens calmly shifted rookie Michael Oher to protect Flacco’s blind side, and the entire line was just great. Oher was very good; the line did a great job rebounding from last week’s debacle.

Defensive Line: B

They didn’t play the run well early. Kevin Smith did a good job of getting yards when he could, finishing with 69 yards. The Ravens had only one sack, but the defensive line did what they had to do. They pressured Daunte Culpepper, forcing him into some mistakes, and the defense as a unit has been playing better.

Game stats: 4 tackles (Terrell Suggs), 5 tackles (Dwan Edwards), 3 tackles (Kelly Gregg), 1 tackle (Trevor Pryce), 1 tackle (Paul Kruger), 1 tackle (Justin Bannan).

Season stats: 46 tackles, 3.5 sacks (Terrell Suggs), 43 tackles, 1 sack (Dwan Edwards), 51 tackles (Kelly Gregg), 26 tackles, 6 sacks (Trevor Pryce), 10 tackles, 1 INT (Paul Kruger), 30 tackles (Justin Bannan).

Linebackers: B+

Everyone played well. Ray Lewis was great, as always. Rookie Dannell Ellerbe has been a pleasant surprise all year long and was good again. Jameel McClain, Antwan Barnes and Tavares Gooden, all young guys who hope to fill Bart Scott’s former role, all excelled.

Game stats: 9 tackles (Ray Lewis), 4 tackles (Danell Ellerbe), 7 tackles (Jameel McClain), 6 tackles (Tavares Gooden), 1 sack (Antwan Barnes).

Season stats: 108 tackles, 2 sacks (Ray Lewis), 34 tackles (Danell Ellerbe), 26 tackles (Jameel McClain), 47 tackles (Tavares Gooden), 8 tackles, 1 sack (Antwan Barnes).

Secondary: B

It was refreshing to see the secondary tackle well, something they haven’t done for some time. They shut down Calvin Johnson (4 rec., 37 yards), and the two Lions receivers combined for 76 yards on seven catches. The Ravens intercepted Lions QB Daunte Culpepper twice, one by Tom Zbikowski, who is filling in admirably for the injured Ed Reed, and one by Chris Carr, who has played well lately.

Game stats: 7 tackles, 2 PD (Lardarius Webb), 6 tackles (Dawan Landry), 4 tackles, 2 PD, 1 INT (Tom Zbikowski), 4 tackles (Domonique Foxworth), 2 tackles, 1 INT (Chris Carr), 2 tackles (Cary Williams), 1 tackle (K.J. Gerard).

Season stats: 32 tackles, 1 sack (Lardarius Webb), 71 tackles, 4 INT (Dawan Landry), 19 tackles, 2 INT (Tom Zbikowski), 42 tackles, 1 INT (Domonique Foxworth), 26 tackles, 2 INT (Chris Carr), 16 tackles (Cary Williams), 1 tackle (K.J. Gerard).

Special Teams: B

I’m handing out a lot of B’s because I’m not sure how to gauge exactly how good the units are. It’s easy to play in the secondary when you’re up by 45, so they get a B for showing up to play. The special teams did that, too. Chris Carr and Lardarius Webb had nice returns, and Billy Cundiff and Sam Koch did well in the kicking game.

Game stats: 2 KR, 33 yards (Lardarius Webb), 2 PR, 31 yards (Chris Carr), 2-2 FG, 6-6 XP (Billy Cundiff), 2 punts, 81 yards (Sam Koch).

Season stats: 33 KR, 861 yards, 1 TD (Lardarius Webb), 24 PR, 174 yards (Chris Carr), 9-11 FG, 10-10 XP (Billy Cundiff), 55 punts, 2,555 yards (Sam Koch).

Isaac Barrow, you are a good writer and a smart football guy. I’ve read your stuff before. So how can a 48-3 win generate anything other than running A+ grades on a report card? You’re too hard on this Ravens team!
