Packers DT Cullen Jenkins Heading To The Windy City?

April 6, 2011 by

The Bears need some help at the defensive tackle position. Veteran defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins could be the answer. The 30-year old tackle has spent his entire seven year career with the Bears biggest rival, the Green Bay Packers.

Jenkins is a unrestricted free-agent and the Packers don’t seem that interested in re-signing when and if the lockout is over.

The 6’2″, 305 lb defensive tackle has appeared in 93 games, making 194 tackles, 29 sacks, one interception and five forced fumbles.

Jenkins has averaged over four sacks per season since he came into the league in 2004. Jenkins has stayed pretty healthy throughout his career besides 2008, where he went down for the season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Jenkins will likely be a priority signing behind Bears veteran Anthony Adams, who is currently an unrestricted free-agent.’s beat writer John “Moon”Mullin said had this to say about Cullen Jenkins:

“Consider Adams along with Jenkins the top two signing priorities, ahead of center Olin Kreutz in some organization thinking.”

Mullin mentions later on in the article that the Bears will likely target Jenkins and Seahawks free agent DT Brandon Mebane. Pulling players away from the Packers isn’t something the Bears usually do, but pulling veteran lineman out of free agency is something they do. If they can get Jenkins in the rotation at defensive tackle, I don’t see why he can’t disrupt the Green Bay Packers in his Bears debut, possibly the first game of the season.

The Bears want Jenkins to be added alongside Anthony Adams and Henry Melton because it seems they don’t believe that Matt Toeaina is really a pass rusher. Toeaina played pretty well last season, but didn’t show that he was anything more than a fill the gap guy. It will be interesting to see what the Bears do with this defensive tackle position either through free agency or through the draft.
