NFL Breakout Team 2008 - Offense
August 19, 2008
QB: Jay Cutler, 3rd yr, Denver Broncos
One of the strongest arms in football.
RB: Marshawn Lynch, 2nd yr, Buffalo Bills
Rushed for over 1,100 yards as a rookie. Improved patience will translate to big things.
WR: Vincent Jackson, 4th yr, San Diego Chargers
Outstanding size augments his first-class athleticism. Came alive in the playoffs last year.
WR: Calvin Johnson, 2nd yr, Detroit Lions
Healthy, more mature, playing in a new offense.
TE: Vernon Davis, 3rd yr, San Francisco 49ers
Even with the Niners’ shaky QB situation, he’ll get plenty of opportunities as one of the focal points in Mike Martz’s offense.
LT: D’Brickashaw Ferguson, 3rd yr, New York Jets
The arrival of Alan Faneca will take a lot of pressure off the willowy young blocker.
LG: Ben Grubbs, 2nd yr, Baltimore Ravens
May not get the credit he deserves because of Baltimore’s looming offensive struggles, but mobility makes him one of the game’s best right now.
C: Nick Mangold, 3rd yr, New York Jets
Run-blocking prowess should put him in the Pro Bowl this season.
RG: Jahri Evans, 3rd yr, New Orleans Saints
This is fudging the “breakout” concept considering he’s already one of the top 5 guards in football. He’ll make his first Pro Bowl in ’08.
RT: Willie Colon, 3rd yr, Pittsburgh Steelers
Had no problem fending off Max Starks early in training camp. Did a fine job cooking his immense raw talent last year.
The following young players will improve in ’08 but have already surpassed “breakout” status:
RB Adrian Peterson
LT Joe Thomas
RB Ryan Grant
WR Greg Jennings
