Live from New York! It’s another loss for the Bills
Brian Brohm played his first game with high expectations all around him, but let the Bills faithful down. Of course, being in New York for the holidays, I was surrounded by people that didn’t really expect much from the quarterback or the offensive line that blocks for him. This would be Brohm’s first start in the NFL since being drafted by the Packers in the 2008 draft out of Louisville. It is a good thing no one was expecting much, because he never found the end-zone nor did the rest of the team.
Brohm finished the game with 146 passing yards on 17-of-29 passing attempts and two interceptions and no touchdowns. The no touchdowns would also spread throughout the rest of the offense like the H1N1 virus. Bills starting running back Fred Jackson only managed to compile a whopping 39 yards on the ground. Jackson actually got the start over Marshawn Lynch who was healthy and ready to go. Lynch finished the game, based on what little time he played, with 3 yards. Yes, 3 yards.
Along with my grandmother, we sat and watched the Bills go three and out in the first four possessions of the game. Needless to say, the more we watched the more we laughed at the game. I never heard my grandmother say “they suck” so much in my life. It was nothing more then a memorable viewing experience with a die hard Bills fan.
With all due respect, the Bills did have 18 players on the IR which included the number 1 and number 2 quarterbacks on the depth chart, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards. When it comes right down to it, Joe Montana could have been taking snaps for the Bills and he couldn’t make the receiver core do anything. The receiving core, who in my eyes are the worst in the league except the Raiders, finished the game with no touchdowns and 138 yards receiving. Of course, it would have been more if Terrel Owens actually put fourth some effort on that the long pass from Brohm in the second quarter.
The only points scored were from Rian “the golden foot” Lindell. For the record, I did send him a Christmas card and offered to be his campaign manager if he runs for president. Thank you again Rian.
On the other side of the ball, the Bills defense could not tackle anyone nor could they stop the run. Come to think of it, they couldn’t do anything right against the Falcons. The only bright spot on defense was the stellar play of Aaron Schobel who has been rumored about retiring at the end of the this season. He is a free-agent and he is tired of not making the playoffs, which he has not done in all his 7 year career in Buffalo. He won’t stick around after this year and other teams will be calling. Looks like we are losing another one on defense.
Falcons QB Matt Ryan had a stellar day against the number one defense in the league for interceptions, which there were none. Ryan finished the day with three touchdowns and 250 yards passing. Two of those touchdowns and most of those passing yards were caught by Roddy White. As mentioned earlier, Roddy had two touchdowns on the day along with 139 yards receiving.
So, where do we go from here you may ask? Well, maybe just maybe the Bills can pull off a win next week against the Colts, but only if the Colts rest their starters on both sides of the ball for the whole game. Even then, with all the Colts starters ridding the pine, would the win really be a victory or a way for the Colts to give the Bills a pity win?
Following the Colts game, the season will be over. Yes, another season gone for the Bills not making the playoffs. Maybe in the off-season, the Bills can clean up their team and organizational issues and put a decent product on the field next year.
