The 2010 NFL Draft seems miles and the Jets are #1 in the league in defense and the running game and they are still developing their franchise QB.

So where will they go with their first round pick?

The only two things I can see the Jets getting currently are a Wide Receiver or a pass rusher with their first round pick.

Braylon Edwards is the number one receiver for the Jets right now, but his contract expires this year and he hasn’t really worked out with the Jets. He has had the case of the droppies all season and he can’t seem to get the same page with Mark Sanchez.

I believe the Jets will sign him for another season and work with him and Sanchez on their timing in the offseason, as well has his hands. If they don’t though, look for the Jets to draft a receiver in the first or second rounds.

I believe the Jets will most likely get a pass rusher in the first round of the 2010 draft.

The Jets have no problem putting pressure on QBs with blitz packages and such. The problem is getting to the quarterback as the Jets finished the season 18th in the league in sacks with 32.

Everyone on the Jets starting defensive line is over 30 and the last time we tried to get a pass rusher he is turning out to be a bust. I’ll give you a hint his name starts with a V and ends with ernon Gholston.

Gholston is having tons of trouble getting to the quarterback and in two seasons he has no sacks. It took undrafted rookie Jets outside linebacker Jamaal Westerman,  31 and a half less games and counting, to get a sack.

With Rex Ryan and his defensive at the helm you will have to believe he will continue to beef up the defense until it is as good as possible. I think he will either go with a defensive end or an outside linebacker in the first round or second rounds.

Names Jets Fans To Watch Out For:

Golden Tate WR ND: Great speed, great hands and a great playmaker the only thing Golden Tate lacks is size. But good hands are definitely a step up from Butter Finger Edwards.  The Jets where looking to trade up to get Percy Harvin last year who is similar to Tate. I would not be surprised if the Jets used their first round pick to get Tate.

Arrelious Benn WR Illinois: A great blend at size and speed standing at 6′ 2. The Jets need a tall wide receiver who could go up and get the ball like Edwards could do only if he could catch. He is another wide receiver I would not be surprised if the Jets drafted with their first round pick.

Corey Wootton DE Northwestern: Wootton is a nightmare to college lineman standing at a tall 6′7. He is great putting pressure on QB’s recording 10 sacks in his senior season. He is a great defensive end for 3-4 scheme and you can believe Rex Ryan and Jet scouts will keep an eye on him as he is projected to be a mid to late first round pick..

Rickey Sapp DE/LB Clemson: Although Sapp played DE in college, he is likely going to be an OLB in a 3-4 scheme. He did not make as much as an impact in college, but shows he has talent and can definitely get the Quarterback. He is currently predicted to be a late first round pick.

Jerry Hughes OLB TCU: This senior has speed and does a great job timing snap counts. He can also get to the QB recording 11.5 sacks this season. Some scouts have him as high as late first and as low as the third round. His lack of size should hurt his stock but some scouts see his stock rising as time goes on.

The draft is still along time away with playoffs, pro day, and the combine all still coming up, so anything can change from now until April.

So who do you think the Jets will draft? What position do you think they will draft in the first round? Let me know down below.

I think they’ll defeat the Bengals, but won’t make it past the Chargers in the final game. Sanchez has to improve significantly, and I’m not sure if Golden Tate is that wide receiver the Jets would need to get over the hump.

I think Golden Tate can have a simular impact that Steve Smith does to the Panthers. They both play very simular since they are both small have great hands and speed. As far as playoff expectations look for my article Thursday or Friday which i will talk about my prediction. Thanks for your response.

I’d love to see the Jets draft a big-time WR, just to help solidify the Sanchez pick. Or maybe a dominant pass rusher who can do what Vernon Gholston never did.

  • Juan Green says:

i woul like to see the jets make a run at peppers!! and draft benn. i think pepp would put the defense over the top and benn could develope with mark.

  • Dan Brown says:

Jets need to dump Edwards. He will never be a consistent reliable
receiver. He has hands of stone. Don’t let an occasional nice play make you think he is actually as good as he thinks he is. If it wasn’t for bad coverage on the 80 yard play he would have only made one catch in a big playoff game. Philly passed on the trade & ended up drafting a much better player.

  • Shawn Bowers says:

There’s no way the Jets will use their first pick on a WR. If you watched the AFC Championship you saw the reason the Jets lost is because they didn’t have a corner to man up to Garcon and Collie. The Jets will say goodbye to Lito and Strickland and Coleman and probably Kerry Rhodes. Tough to say the #1 pass defense in the NFL needs revamped but it does. They’ll add a corner and safety. They’ll also look for a bull rushing DE that can control 2 gaps in the run game to pressure the QB without the blitz. Forget about the WR. This team wants to play defense and run, run, run. Keep that in mind as you’re building your draft targets

Shaun, keep in mind that this article was writted before the colts game where the secondary was really exposed. I agree with you on most of what your saying and I will try and update this article asap.
    Thanks
