Jairus Byrd and Terrell Owens Are the Lone Bright Spots in the Bills Loss to the Texans

Sunday, the Bills and Texans faced off in Buffalo which some thought would have been the start of a three-game winning streak for the Bills. Unfortunately, we were wrong as the Bills lost to the Texans 31-10.

Coming into the game, the Bills offense was led by backup QB Ryan Fitzpartick due to the concussion to Trent Edwards in last week’s game against the Panthers. The defense was led by S Jairus Byrd and his multiple interceptions in the last three games. Needless to say, one of these leaders did not disappoint.

Let’s unveil the bad first (drum roll please). Ryan Fitzpatrick was, how do I put this in somewhat nice terms… worthless. Fitzpartick went 15-of-23 for 117 yards and two interceptions. Trent Edwards could have put up these numbers with the concussion symptoms he’s been dealing with. Furthermore, the offense could find no spark the entire game. The lone touchdown was compliments of Terrell Owens on an end-to-end rushing play. Even with the Bills defense intercepting two balls and forcing a fumble, the offense had no answer for not finding the end-zone.

The Bills special teams had 189 return yards on six attempts and still nothing by the offense. Speaking of the bad offense, the Bills running back core only tallied 68 total yards on 19 attempts. Did I mention that the offense was horrible?

OK, now the good. Terrell Owens finally found the end-zone, bringing his season touchdown total to two. Yes, I said two. The special teams had a great game, as mentioned above. Jairus Byrd is a BEAST. Mr. Byrd intercepted two more balls, bringing his season total to seven and his third game in a row with an interception. Oh, did I mention that this is his third game in a row with at least two interceptions?

Rian Lindell continues to kick the ball great accruing 4 points for the Bills bringing his season point total to one million. Safety George Wilson led the team in tackles with seven and Paul Posluszny had five tackles of his own while forcing a fumble which was recovered by DT Marcus Stroud.

Yes, it is defensive numbers and return yards like this which clearly present to the NFL world that the Bills need serious help on offense. In the off-season, they appeared to have fixed that problem by signing Terrell,  but they were very wrong. The Bills need to look long and hard this offseason as to how they are going to fix this offense. Maybe they should start drafting some offensive players in the draft instead off nothing but defensive players.

Hey, I am not saying those defensive players haven’t been great additions. What I am saying is, you don’t win games by making interceptions and not capitalizing on point off of turnovers and kicking field goals.

If defense wins you championships, then the defense needs to score touchdowns. The Bills defense is making the right plays, but they are not finding the end-zone and we all know the offense is not. The stats show very few points being scored by the defense, which is sad because the offense isn’t that much farther ahead.

This week, the Bills are on the bye. Hopefully, they won’t find a way to lose this one.

Once they return to action, Trent Edwards will be taking the snaps again and leading the horrible offense against the one-win Tennessee Titans. The Titans will come into this game with one win and possibly two as they match up against the 49ers next week.

Jeremy, are you surprised that we haven’t seen a total blowup from T.O. yet? And what about Lee Evans? Where has he been this season? Wasn’t he supposed to be dominant with teams double covering Owens this year?

    Hey Davis,
Yes, I am surprised Terrell has not blown up yet at the team or organization. I think reality has hit him square in the face this season about him not being “all that.” He knows he is slowing down and maybe, just maybe, he has realized how good he had it in Philly and Dallas. He will not be back next year and based on his numbers, he may be no where next year.
As for Evans, I don’t know whats going on with him. Of course, Terrell was supposed to pull double coverage giving Evans many more chances to make big plays, but that has not happened. If Evans wants to be the number 1 next season, then he better start catching balls. From what I ahve seen, neither one is having a great year. I think the offensive MVP is Fred Jackson.
