Is the Jets’ Curse Over?
Ever since their super bowl upset in 1969, what ever could go wrong did, for the Jets. Everything such as flukes, collapses, disappointments, you name it.
Events such as the 1998 AFC Championship, with the Jets beating the Broncos 10-7 in the second half, a swirling gust of wind came on the Broncos kickoff, knocking the ball off it’s patch and the Broncos recovered. This lead to a Broncos field goal tying the game and lead to a 13 unanswered points by the Broncos. The Jets lost 23-10.
Or who could forget the 2004 divisional championship against the Steelers, with the AFC Championship within sight, The Jets kicker, Doug Brien, missed two routine field goals at the end of the game which cost the Jets a heartbreaking loss in overtime.
Even Joe Namath, the hero of the Superbowl win, never posted a winning season after the 1969 season due to the troubles with his knees.
Ever since 1969, every season has lead to heartbreak for Jet fans.
And when the Jets loss to Atlanta, and Rex Ryan declared his team out of the playoffs, it seemed like a typical Jets season, but then a funny thing happened.
A path was found for the Jets to regain control of their own destiny in week 16, it required three teams to lose and the Jets to beat the 14-0 Colts. With the Jets luck, it seemed almost impossible that all these events would occur.
Not only did all the teams lose, but the Colts pulled their starters and the Jets won and playoffs where in sights. But Jets fans were skeptical as most fans are used to false hope after 40 years of dissapointment.
But the Jets pounded the Bengals 37-0 in week 17 and the Jets were in.
Usually for the Jets in the playoffs, this was the time for all the really bad luck to start happening. But it has been quite the opposite this year.
Two of the top field goal kickers in the league have gone 0/4 inside 40 yards against the Jets in both games. Only one other field goal from 40 and under has been missed in the playoffs.
Also, lets look at the Darrelle Revis interception against the Chargers, it’s miraculous that everything bounced the way it did, to perfectly settle on Revis for him to grab the pick. That interception helped the Jets gain momentum and was a key game changer for the Jets.
So with how lucky the Jets been getting, is the curse over? Will 2010 bring in a new era for the Jets where they don’t constantly break their fans heart? Is the curse just going to take place late in the playoffs where Jet fans will suffer the biggest blow?
We are talking about the same old Jets so I am going to say no, not yet .The only way I am going to say the curse is over is when the Jets win the super bowl.
The Jets still have one game left and that means anything can happen, especially when the Jets are playing Peyton Manning. Even if the Jets somehow beat the Colts then they still got another game, where Jet fans are going to be most vulnerable to get their heartbroken with all the pride they will have after beating the Colts.
The future does look bright for the Jets, with a young team and a new coach. But the 1999 season is always going to stick in my mind. The Jets looked like they had a bright future after making it to the the AFC Championship, but in the first game Vinny Testaverde suffered a season ending injury. The Jets finished tied for last in the AFC East that year.
When ever you start to think this year is different for the Jets, they always in the end ripping your heart to shreds.
As much as I hope I’m wrong the curse is inevitable and just waiting to happen this post season.
So what do you guys think? Is the Jets curse over? Is 2010 going to bring in a new era where the Jets don’t break their fans heart? Or is the curse jut imminent and waiting to happen?
Let me know down below!
