Getting to Know the Newest Bucs Receivers
When Josh Freeman became the starting quarterback for the Buccaneers midway through the 2009 season, he inherited a team with very weapons offensively.
Sure he had a safety valve in Kellen Winslow, and could toss the ball out of the backfield to the healthy and much improved Cadillac Williams, but beyond that, his options were few and far between.
In the 2010 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers began addressing those issues by drafting two highly touted receivers when they selected Arrelious Benn in the 2nd round and Mike Williams in the 4th round.
Arrelious Benn is a junior from Illinois who was seen by many as a top 10 talent before the start of the 2009 college football season. Unfortunately, poor quarterback play lead to a less then stellar campaign for Benn who saw his draft stock suffer as a result.
The Bucs were more then willing to take a chance on Benn who received rave reviews from scouts around the NFL for his work ethic and his strong personal character. In a league where any character issue can be seen as a red flag, Benn’s character is anything but questionable.
It is expected that Benn will see the field immediately as a starter, and rightfully so. The two veterans currently ahead of him on the depth chart are Michael Clayton and Reggie Brown. There is league wide speculation the Bucs are planning on cutting Clayton as opposed to paying him that ridiculous salary they offered him in that ill be gotten contract from last season.
Benn can stretch the field for Freeman, and provides a sure set of hands, something the current Bucs receiving corps is lacking.
The other receiver the Bucs selected during the 2010 Draft was Mike Williams from Syracuse.
For all the positive things scouts had to say about Benn, the exact opposite could be said about Williams.
Mike Williams was viewed by scouts as the third rated receiving prospect in this year’s class, but saw his stock plummet as a result of a poor attitude and quitting on the Syracuse football team.
His stock fell so far that he was available on Day 3 of the Draft when the Bucs decided to take a risk on the immensley talented but troubled receiver.
Truth be told, the Bucs have taken risks on players that have had character issues in the past such as Antonio Bryant and Kellen Winslow, and both players performed well without incident.
In the ideal situation, the Bucs coaching staff and several veterans such as Ronde Barber and Cadillac Williams will take Mike Williams under their wings and look after him.
The team will also rely on Benn to steer Williams in the right direction as well. The hope is that Williams will see how Benn conducts himself and handles the pressures of life in the NFL and will follow suit.
Although Williams is a 4th round pick, the team expects him to make a contribution to the team immediately. He will see time as the third and fourth receiver in certain packages, and head coach Raheem Morris went so far as to say that it would not shock him to see Williams starting as the season progresses.
It was very apparent that they needed to surround Josh Freeman with some new weapons in order for him, as well as the team to make strides this season.
While it is tough to gauge how a player will fare in his rookie season, the Bucs at the very least have addressed the issue and provided Freeman with two dynamic playmakers.

Benn has a chance to be a superstar. And what makes these picks, both of them, all the better is that it allows Sammie Stroughter to play the slot, which he is perfect for. Great article, thanks for the read!
