Dolphins Playoff Hopes On Life Support but Still a Alive

December 23, 2009 by | ,

Well, the Titans game certainly was a rollercoaster.  What looked like a blowout in the first half turned into a potential game of the year candidate with the Dolphins repeatedly driving down the field to tie up the game late in the fourth.  When they won the coin toss, you could just feel it- surely they would do it one more time!  All they had to do was get in field goal range to put us in a great position to slide into the Wildcard race.  Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be-  one bad interception and tacky personal foul call later, and the Dolphins left Nashville without the W.

However, despite what Rex Ryan may tell you (seriously, what is wrong with that guy?  He seems like he needs to be medicated. . .), there is still  a chance for the Phins to make it into post season play.  It involves many a loss for other teams, and the NFL’s byzantine tie breaking rules- but it does involve one part we DO control- going 2-0 at home to end the season.

That isn’t going to be an easy task- in the final week we play the defending Super Bowl champion Steeler’s, who will be playing either for a spot of their own, or (maybe worse) their pride.  But before we can even think about that, we have to get through the Dolphins most difficult foe of all time!  The. . . .Texans?

Yes, the Texans- the only team in the NFL that the Dolphins have yet to score a victory against.  We couldn’t do it when they were a pathetic, struggling expansion franchise- and its only going to be tougher this time.  This Texans team is perfectly suited to dismantling the Dolphins and coming away with the victory.

Why you ask?  Because of Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson.  The Texans possess the #2 passing attack in the entire league, and 90% of that is because of Schaub to Johnson- either in actual passing yards, or by Johnson demanding so much attention that it frees up other players.  Johnson leads the entire league with a ridiculous 1,433 yards in only 14 games, good for an average of over 100 yards per game.

And that number right there is the key to this game.  The Texans defense is nothing to be scared of- we should be able to both run and throw on them with success.  They don’t have many other receiving options, with the next best receiver on the Texans having less than HALF of Johnson’s receiving yards total (Kevin Walter with 560 yards).   Our season long kryptonite of receiving tight ends should be much of an issue either, with both the dynamic Owen Daniels and Anthony Hill, one of his replacements- going down with ACL injuries.  They even lost their dynamic backfield threat Steve Slaton, and have no impressive running backs to speak of.

The NUMBER 1 priority of this game should be by far to shut down Andre Johnson, and hit Matt Schaub.  When Johnson is held to under 100 yards, the Texans are only 3-5;  but when he gets his yards they are 5-1.  If Vontae Davis and Gibril Wilson can play a great game, and everyone else just does their jobs- the Dolphins can get this much needed win.

In fact, I am predicting that we WILL hold him under 100 yards, and we WILL win this game?  Why you ask?  Because we’re DUE TO BEAT THE (*^*&%^&$#$##%*%^&^%$ing Texans already!  After that, we just need to keep our fingers crossed for the roll of the dice to go our way.

Dolphins have great playoff hopes if they can get a win this week against the Texans. I think the key will be getting pass-rushing pressure on Matt Schaub.
