Cream Of The Crop: Ranking The Top Ten Receivers In The NFL Today
Today, I continue my cream of the crop series. Last article was the top ten offenses, and the next few articles will involve offense.
Now we have the top ten receivers heading into 2010.
Who will emerge onto this list? Who will miss the cut?
Enjoy!
Here are some honorable mentions Vincent Jackson ( How will potential holdout affect his game?) , Greg Jennings/Donald Driver
Wes Welker ( wants to see how he bounces back from injury) ,Derrick Mason ,Hines Ward ,Malcom Floyd , Desean Jackson
10. Sidney Rice
As a member of the Vikings, Sidney Rice emerged as one of the best receivers in the game.
With 1312 yards and 8 touchdowns, Rice is on his way to being a future star in the making.
The reason, he, just like Miles Austin, is lower on the list is because of consistency. I want to see another good year out of Rice, and before I crown him a top five receiver, I want to know is he for real, or just a product of Brett Favre being there?
Nontheless, he’ll be one of the best heading into 2010.
9. Santonio Holmes
Despite his early suspension in 2010, Santonio Holmes will be an explosive receiver for the Jets. His ability in yards after catch is quite amazing, as he turns small routes into long touchdown runs.
He should help Mark Sanchez grow as a quarterback immensly.
Due to the missed time, however, he is lower on the list.
8. Anquan Boldin
Anquan Boldin got his wish: he is now a number one receiver on a team that is looking to find a passing identity.
Yes, he has faced injury problems in the past, but he is the perfect fit for Joe Flacco.
His ability to be physical with the opposing cornerbacks, and having success at the slant attacks brings a new target to this Ravens team.
Flacco and Boldin have made a great connection in camp, which is good for their team.
He may not have the speed to run long down field, but a 1000+ yard season with at least 6 touchdowns isn’t out of the question.
7. Steve Smith
Steve Smith was under the radar in some minds in 2009. However, he was one of the best in the game.
With 1220 yards and 7 touchdowns receiving, Smith proved he is still elite.
The biggest reason is quarterback Matt Moore, where Smith increased his numbers drastically.
As the defenses tries to stack up against the run, Smith will have single coverage, thus finding his way to another top season in Carolina
6. Randy Moss
Randy Moss has been in the league for awhile, but 2009 may have been one of his best seasons ever.
With 1264 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns last season, Moss was a top five receiver last year.
I’m going to predict the numbers are a little lower in 2010. The Patriots are aging a bit, and though I do see 1000+ yards and 8+ touchdowns, Moss is nearing the end of a famous career.
5. Calvin Johnson
Calvin Johnson is one of the most talented receivers in football, but is overshawdowed by being on a bad team.
Johnson just missed the 1000 yard mark last season, but this year will be different.
The addition of Jahvid Best will create more excitment on the offense, and more opportunities for Johnson to find success.
Prediction: 1000+ yards, 8 touchdowns
4. Brandon Marshall
Same face, new place.
Brandon Marshall will once again shine as one of the best receivers in football.
Marshall comes to an offense that was hungry for receivers, and has a potent rushing attack.
He will open up the offense, and do wonders for Chad Henne.
Prediction: 1200+ yards, 9 touchdowns
3. Reggie Wayne
Reggie Wayne will continue his dominance in 2010 as a member of the Colts.
As long as Peyton Manning is the quarterback, Wayne will get his touches.
Wayne will have similar stats to last season, where he had 1200+ yards and ten touchdowns.
2. Larry Fitzgerald
Sure, Anquan Boldin might have left the desert, but that won’t stop Larry Fitzgerald from being one of the best receivers in the game.
Steve Breaston and Early Doucet are viable secondary options for Matt Leinart.
No reason to have questions about Fitz despite the new quarterback.
1. Andre Johnson
Without any question in my mind Andre Johnson is the best wide receiver in the league.
Having led the league in receiving yards, and having 9 touchdowns on the year, there is no doubt Andre Johnson will put up similar numbers this year.
If the Texans have hopes of reaching the playoffs, Andre will be a main reason for it.

Good list, but how about some love for the route runners? Where is Welker? Miles Austin? Donald Driver and Greg Jennings? Hines Ward?
They made the honorable mentions list.
Boldin is too high on this list. He’s no better than number 10 and i wouldn’t even put him there. but i like your analysis other than that.
Those in the top 10 make some room, here comes Michael Crabtree!
Sidney Rice is a product of the system (Brett Favre). Put Tavaras Jackson in for Favre and Rice doesn’t get those numbers.
