Colts Talk: Austin Collie, A Future Brandon Stokley?
In the first round of the NFL Draft, the Colts were up at the 27th pick.
Many people believed a wide receiver or a defensive tackle in the making for that pick on Indy. The experts were proven wrong as Indianapolis drafted running back Donald Brown, who was a complete start a Conneticutt.
As a receiver wasn’t found for the Colts, they eventually decided picking one in the fourth round as Indy picked Austin Collie from BYU.
At 6′2″ and pushing 210 pounds, Collie looked to be a dominant starter at the slot position, as he may be competing against Pierre Garcon, Roy Hall, and now even Taj Smith maybe. But let’s save that for my next article.
Collie looked like a dangerous player with his size and his ability. Ability do what? He hasn’t shown anything! Oh yes he has. Take a look at what he has done at BYU:
| Category | Number | BYU Rank, All Time |
|---|---|---|
| Career receptions | 215 | 1st |
| Career receiving yards | 3,255 | 1st |
| Career receiving touchdowns | 30 | 1st |
Pretty sweet, huh? But that’s not all! Take a look at what he did in the NCAA!
| Category | Number | NCAA Rank, 2008 |
|---|---|---|
| Receiving yards per game | 118.31 | 1st |
| Total yards receiving | 1538 | 1st |
| Consecutive 100 yd. receiving games | 11 | Tie 1st, shared with Michael Crabtree |
| Receiving yards per catch | 8.15 | 3rd |
| Total receptions | 106 | 3rd |
| Touchdowns receiving | 15 | 4th |
| Total all-purpose yards per game | 162.46 | 12th |
Now I can see why the Indianapolis Colts decided to pick him, but it did look surprising to me seeing him picked in the fourth round. Luckily, the Colts snabbed him. And if Collie didn’t skip his senior year, oh no, the Colts would have taken much much earlier.
S0 with Collie having a pretty good resume with the stats we have witnessed so far, I think it’s time to jump to something: Could it possibly be the next coming of Brandon Stokley.
Yes yes, I know, the receiver who was commented by the NFL’s best quarterback Peyton Manning as number 18 examined as Brandon is the “greatest slot receiver in NFL history.” And seriously, it is true.
But when Stokley left after the remarkable 2006-07 season, it brought Manning down a bit. That’s when Indy brought in wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez who many would believe that was the next coming of Stoke.
He may be. Let’s take a look.
First, B-Stoke A-Coll (yes I know, some weird nicknames I just made up) were both picked in fourth round of the NFL Draft. Both also played for the Colts, of coures, and they both play at the slot as well as they have the same skin color.
But those are mostly comparisons in appearance, not talent.
We don’t know how good Collie may be in the NFL. He may become a bust and he was just a waste of a draft pick just like Wes Pate was with the Baltimore Ravens a couple of years ago.
But Indy is known for making good quaility draft picks in late rounds, like what we did with many of their draft picks (for example: Robert Mathis). If Collie proved he was a number one receiver in college, there is surely a good chance he can be an extroadinary slot receiver in the NFL as well.
We’ll see. Soon, the Eagles and 49ers may regret drafting Jeremy Maclin or Michael Crabtree. Collie looks like a key player in part of this year’s NFL Draft class.
In this class will be remembered.
And maybe, so will Collie.
I like this article, and I like Collie’s chances because the man throwing him the ball is Peyton Manning!
I agree I think Collie will be an impact player and a perfect fit for the Colts offense
The only reason Collie (the best NCAA reciever 08′) went in the fourth round is because he did not play in the “O’l Boys Club” i.e., the BCS. With the MWC having a dirty deal with a smalltime network that is only televised on a certain satellite network we can expect to see more great players from that conference getting little of the national attention they deserve. I agree and think the Eagles and especially the 49rs (what a “Crabby” debacle they got themselves into eh? What an immature player) are going to be kicking themselves over not picking him up. I’m really looking forward to seeing some good synergy with Collie and Manning. Go Colts!
[...] win over the Seattle Seahawks Sunday. It was a coming out party for Collie, who all game long was compared to former Colt Brandon Stokely, a savvy pro now in Denver who became a star on the other end of Manning [...]
Do you have any stocks you can recommend?
Collie is fantastic!
Good call
