Chiefs Take Another Crushing Loss To AFC West Rival.

It seems like the Chiefs are still basking in the glow over the Overtime win two weeks ago against Pittsburgh. Maybe it’s time someone remind them that they’ve had two games since. For the second straight week, the Chiefs took by 4 scores, with a 44-13 lost to Denver.

Here’s what will be hard to understand about the last two weeks. The scoreboard honestly doesn’t reflect on the teams play.

Although the pass defense didn’t do well against Rivers, they did stop LT, by all means(minus the goal line situations) and the offense has been improving. Jamaal Charles is making better cuts, and seeing running lanes better than he was before, and in a shocking turn of events, the offensive line isn’t doing all that bad.

The problem the Chiefs seem to be having is getting the first down. Last week against San Diego, and this week against Denver, the Chiefs were nearly doubled by their opponents in total first downs, and their success rate on third down in just under 30 percent. Ouch.

Despite a 3-9 record, the Chiefs should be noticing the progression made by the team. After week 1, I fully expected a 2 win season, at best. Come week 13, we’ve seen a team that has taken down the defending champs, and nearly won against Dallas, Oakland, and Jacksonville. Dear I say it, that Kansas City is just a few clutch moments away from being in the playoff chase. Honestly, as a Chiefs fan, I can’t complain, nor worry. Progression is what it takes to get back to the top. As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” The biggest weakness for the Chiefs coming in was the linebackers. Although he’s probably nothing more than a pleasant surprise, did anyone think Andy Studebaker would be getting ESPN highlights reels come week 11? I sure didn’t. Tamba Hali, another pleasant surprise. Sure he’s probably the worst option for a strongside linebacker in coverage, but he’s getting pressure on the quarterback. He had 3 sacks yesterday against a top offensive line, and now has 6.5 sacks on the season.

For as much as it’s best to praise a progressing team, it’s hard to be optimistic when there’s little talent to progress at the moment. Hali is trying a new position 3 years into the league, and likely going to reach his peek. I still don’t feel that Dorsey was the right pick, and still believe he could be moved to a 4-3 team in exchange for a pick to use on a true 3-4 defensive end, but that’s my thought. It also seems like the popular pick for Chiefs fans is to avoid drafting Eric Berry at free safety or strong safety, and that I just don’t understand. Eric Berry is someone any defense needs (ask Pittsburgh how it feels to not have Troy Polamalu) and the Chiefs are in need of a safety (Mike Brown is far from the answer.)

As for the season, the Chiefs are likely to go 5-11. Personally, I refuse to go with the popular “Tank it for a top pick” method because players like Hali, Dorsey, Jackson, and others need the game time to progress. Right now Im thinking that Charles may be the teams option for halfback, and that an early mock could see the Chiefs going with

1st -  Eric Berry

2nd - Mike Iuapti (you can not ignore the interior OL. Iuapti would be wonderful at LG, while moving Waters to RG)

3rd - Javier Arenas (anyone watch that Florida vs Alabama game? Arenas is a good option for the Chiefs)

4th - Micah Johnson (text inside linebacker. Could make a HUGE difference for the run stopping game)

Pardon me and my mishap thoughts. It’s not fun watching my two favorite teams (Chiefs and Steelers) lose to two teams I despise. Hopefully the Chiefs redeem themselves when they host Buffalo on sunday.

I’m worried about two things: 1. our offensive line can’t protect Matt Cassell, and 2. our defensive front seven, even with the new 3-4 scheme, can’t get to the quarterback. Thisis what Scott Pioli needs to fix most.
