Charles Haley and Emmitt Smith: Nominees For The Hall of Fame

A couple of days ago, the Hall of Fame made the announcement of the semifinalist candidates that featured 25 men who are now one step closer to the Hall of Fame.

On that list, two Cowboy stars shined brightly from the 1990s dynasty.

Emmitt Smith, the all-time leading NFL rusher, and Charles Haley, the dominant defensive end for the Cowboys.

Other candidates on the list included big names like: Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, Roger Craig, John Randle, Terrell Davis, and Shannon Sharpe.

The way the Hall of Fame is set up is now this list of 25 candidates will be reviewed and 10 men shall be cut from this list to make a finalist list of 15 men.

Then, two men selected by the Senior Committee. The Senior Committee is a group of voters who choose candidates that have been accidently overlooked, and their careers ended over 25 years ago.

The two candidates this year are Floyd Little and Dick LeBeau.

Those two will make the finalist list to 17.

Out of 17 candidates, a minimum of four and a maximum of 7 will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The Senior nominees need 80% of the vote to be inducted. They will be reviewed first by all the voters. The voters decided if they are worthy, then move on to an alphabetical order of the modern-era candidates.

The modern era candidates will need 80% of the vote also, in order to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I can give you a guarantee that Emmitt Smith will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, but Charles Haley is a candidate that has as much against him as he has for him.

I will build a case for Charles Haley soon, but Emmitt Smith’s case can be summed up in one sentence, and he will go to the Hall of Fame.

NFL’s all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards.

Done.

It’s about time Jim Plunkett got in.

  • Tony says:

Emmitt for sure. I say Haley is a yes as well, because of the Super Bowl rings. In football you don’t have to declare a team that you enter the hall with (like you do in baseball), but if you did, do you think Haley would choose the Cowboys or Niners?

  • James Williamson says:

Tony, I think the rules are that if you play a significant amount of time with a team, you are a member of that team period. I think that term is 5 years.

Take Deion Sanders, when he goes into the Hall of Fame, I’m 90-100% sure he will be both a Falcon and Cowboy because of the 5 years he spent with each.

Now, personality as the issue, I think Haley would cherish his time in Dallas more because he was run out of San Fran because of issues and he wanted to keep trying to win championships while a lot of Niners, according to Haley, were just relaxing with their two rings from 88-89 and living on a fat paycheck with no desire anymore. Haley never lost his desire, and neither did Dallas, so I’d think he’d pick Dallas.

    E. Smith is a shoe-in for first time selection. Not only for his running and catching stats, but intangibles. He was a great blocker.

    C. Haley had FIVE FIVE. Where he goes teams win. Only one other that I can think of is Earl Morral……………..

One more. Lester Hayes should be selected. When he played noone ran or passed on his side very often.

Emmitt is the NFL’s All-Time Leading Rusher. What else is there to say??? One quality regarding Emmitt that goes overlooked: His opponents would shut him down 20 times in a row in a game. And when they thought they had him, that’s when he came back and put the nail in the coffin. And he can dance, too!!!

Charles Haley: the vital warrior/chess piece that shifted the tide of NFL Championships from one bitter franchise into the hands of their enemy, the Cowboys. 3 Super Bowls and the Cowboys are the team of the 90’s! 5 Super Bowl Rings! Unheard of. Every NFL team needs a #94.

  • Cam Ewing says:

Emmit is a lock on the Hall, without Emmit do the cowboys even win a championship, Not likely. He was the engine, period.
As for haley, he cant be denied, He was the guy that would deliver the hammer over and over to seal the deal, especially in the big games. Hayley and Darren woodson were the stars of Doomsday 2, Both deserve to be in canton. Know one ever talks about woodson, but he was the Emmit of the defense, he hurt people!!!

  • James Williamson says:

Cam, I loved Darren too. All-time leading tackler for Dallas. What hurts him is the fact that the safety position is one that is largely overlooked for the Hall of Fame. and Darren wasn’t a ball hawk like Ed Reed or made those legendary hits like Ronnie Lott.
