Growing up in the Eighties I can tell you, if you didn't live near Atlanta you likely won't remember seeing the Falcons play enough to know any of the players. As a kid growing up in Louisiana the only way I could follow the black and red was reading the black and white Sports Page on Monday mornings. I'd watch Sports Center on Sunday nights to catch any highlights that may or may not grace their show. Typically, it would be a ten second blurb about the game. You may see one or two plays, but that was the extent of their media coverage. On lucky weekends, you may get Chris Berman for thirty to forty five seconds drooling over Jerry Rice as he glides past a confused looking Charles Dimry or DJ Johnson. Otherwise, I watched my two Saints games a year and followed the Falcons as well [...] Continue reading →
It's that time again, my fellow Detroit Lions fans. The official end of the season is upon us, and you're going to watch. You're a Lions fan, but you're also a football fan, and this promises to be an explosive, well-matched, potentially high-scoring Super Bowl. But what's in it for you? Once again, the Lions were out of playoff contention by midseason, and the only talk about the Lions since Week 17 has pertained to the draft in April. So aside from picking a surrogate team to root for during the playoffs (as we have all learned to do as a self-defense mechanism—don't lie, you know you do it, too), how can we Lions fans enjoy the game as, well, Lions fans? I have a few ideas, sorted out for the many different types of Lions fans. For the "Blind [...] Continue reading →
Listen, let me start by saying I do not condone purposely injuring anyone. Football is a violent game where grown men beat on one another for the purposes of victory. Where else in the world can you watch a bunch of millionaires beat each other up? But after watching the New Orleans Saints playoff run many people have spoken out that they are playing too rough. Seriously? Too rough? It should be noted that by next Sundays game the Saints will have faced three future Hall of Fame quaterbacks in Kurt Warner, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. Both Warner and Favre took a beating. The Saints pressure never stopped. On several plays the Saints defenders took a lot of crap from media and fans for their non-stop pressure schemes. It was so bad that defensive coordinator Gregg [...] Continue reading →
Chamionship Sunday has arrived and the teams remaining are interesting indeed. Who would have ever predicted the Jets making it this far with a rookie coach and rookie quarterback? So today I got up early today and began watching the pre-game show on NFL Network. I love listening to Rich Eisen with his crew of retired coaches and players. He's one of the best Ever at keeping control of his show. GREATEST QUARTERBACK IN NFL HISTORY A discussion broke out about Peyton Manning and is he one of, if not, the best quarterback ever to play the game. There were some varied opinions from Warren Sapp, Marshall Faulk, Steve Marriuci and Michael Irvin. The consensus view was yes, he will retire one of the greatest ever. Not so fast though! Retired Dallas Cowboy Irvin [...] Continue reading →
One thing I have learned from being a Jets' Fan is expect the worst, hope for the best: which is exactly what I am going to do with the Jets vs. Bengals game Sunday night. I have seen the story over and over, the Jets are in the playoff race looking good, then they just fall flat on their face. Whether it is in the regular season or in the playoffs, it always ends the same way, every Jets fans heart broken. The football gods where kind to the Jets sunday, everyone lost that needed to losse and the Colts decided to rest their starters. I immediatly thought the Jets luck might be changing. When I thought deeper into it I realized it is just another ploy from the football gods for the Jets to fall flat on their face just like every year since 1969. Things are going wrong for the [...] Continue reading →
It's been fun writing NFL articles this fall covering the New England Patriots, but something I've found myself explaining to a lot of people as of late is that football is not my number one sport.  Football comes a close second behind basketball.  I have more experience playing, watching, and analyzing basketball.  I'm always looking for an opportunity to connect two things that normally don't go together, sometimes to an extreme.  So after seeing that the Boston Celtics held the Charlotte Bobcats to a franchise low 59 points last week, a great (RE: terrible) idea emerged after also remembering the Patriots' "mercifully" scoring 59 points on the Tennessee Titans: What would the New England Patriots look like as a basketball team? BOSTON PATRIOTS: [...] Continue reading →
If NFL teams were girls, what type of girl would each one be? What would it be like to date that team/girl? : Let’s find out. Saints [...] Continue reading →
Every Giants fan worth his salt knows about Jeff Feagles.  He has established himself as one of the greatest all around punters in NFL history.  He is also arguably at the top of the list when it comes to directional kicking.  He has played for five teams, the Patriots, Eagles, Cardinals, Seahawks and Giants, in his illustrious career.  He has played longer than any other active player in the NFL, but to most fans, admittedly younger than the ageless punter, that seems like an abstract notion.  So just how long has Feagles punted in the league?  To answer that question our crack research staff has come up with a top ten list of events and happenings that have occurred since Feagles first donned a professional uniform. [...] Continue reading →
Today, I present you with the top ten funniest football quotes of all time. The quotes come from former coaches, players, commentators, and writers. Check them out and tell me what you think. 1) John Madden, Former Coach/Player/Announcer: “Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they’re bigger than everybody else, and that’s what makes them the biggest guys on the field.” 2) Luke Salisbury, Writer: “Watching football is like watching pornography. There’s plenty of action, and I can’t take my eyes off it, but when it’s over, I [...] Continue reading →
Excerpt: Waiting for players to walk back through the tunnel, I had the pleasure of visiting with Jereome Bettis. Nice guy, huge hands! After 10 minutes, the media was allowed into the Jets locker room. I lived out a childhood fantasy by filing into the locker room right behind The Bus (have to admit, in my fantasy, we were both wearing football uniforms instead of business attire).  Someone called out Bettis the second we stepped inside. I turned and saw Brett Favre chatting with members of the  coaching staff and scarfing down pizza. The roads were mind-boggling. The [...] Continue reading →
