2010 Free Agency

With the draft only 30 days and some loose change away, many are wondering what the Bills are going to do. One of those many is myself. The Bills are signing free agents at a snail's pace. Without boring you to much, the few things the Bills organization has done really has me wondering. The Bills have a new "big name coach," new GM, no T.O., uncertainty at QB, an over-paid running back, no offensive scheme or offense for that matter, a left guard who retired at the tender age of 24, a defensive end who doesn't know if he wants to retire nor will he let the franchise know, and most importantly fans who are fed up with losing. So where do they go from here? Well, first they need to be more aggressive in free agency. Signing offensive tackle, Cornell Green last week and linebacker, [...] Continue reading →
Early in the day Wednesday the Arizona Cardinals came to an agreement with free agent quarterback Derek Anderson on a two-year $7.25 million dollar contract which ended the Cardinals pursuit of restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. Charlie Whitehurst's decision came down to the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks and Whitehurst informed the Chargers front office that he wanted to be traded to Seattle. Today the Seahawks and Chargers came to trade agreement for restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. The Seahawks will send their second-round [...] Continue reading →
Brady Quinn is as Irish as it gets. OK, he's not from Ireland, or even a red head, but his last name suggests Irish roots. And it doesn't end there, no it's only the beginning laddie. Aye, Quinn played in Dublin. Well, Dublin, Ohio at Dublin  Coffman High School. At Dublin High, Quinn played well enough to be listed as ESPN's No. 20 on the list of 100 top prep football players. Next up for this Irish lad was what other than Notre Dame. As the leader of the Fighting Irish, Quinn broke and set 36 Notre Dame passing records; including completions, yards per game (239.6) and touchdowns [...] Continue reading →
After wining and dining with Vikings GM, Rick Speilman, and touring Winter Park in Eden Prairie, free agent RB LaDainian Tomlinson chose to sign with the loser of the AFC Championship Game rather than the loser of the NFC Championship Game. The day after visiting Minnesota, LT flew to New York and talked with the Jets. He left New York the next day and was rumored to be planning trips to Philadelphia and New Orleans before it was announced that he had agreed to a two-year deal to play with the Jets. In New York, LT will be coached by Brian Schottenheimer, who was a quarterback coach in San Diego from 2002-2005 and is the son of LT's former head coach, Marty Schottenheimer. LT was looking for two things in free agency this season: playing time and a Super Bowl ring. He has a [...] Continue reading →
It would be difficult to dispute that Mason Crosby had a bad year kicking field goals for the Green Bay Packers. Among kickers with at least 15 attempts, his 75% average field goal percentage (FG%)  was better than only 6 other kickers in the NFL. Towards the end of the season, Crosby collected “votes of confidence” from Packers coaches like Ted Thompson collects wide receivers (more than should be necessary). Despite his less than eventful 2009, Crosby somehow triggered incentives in his contract that has doubled his salary for 2010, from $500K to 1M. As Don King loves to say, God Bless America!  And [...] Continue reading →
In the past week the Raiders have released 4 veterans:  Justin Fargas, Javon Walker, Greg Ellis and now Gerard Warren and his 6 year/$36M contract (signed when playing for Denver) have been officially released.  With all the costly veterans now being released this can mean a few things.  #1 The Raiders are strapped for cash or #2 Al Davis has accepted the fact that his team is re-building.      The young players have stepped up all across the depth chart.  To name a few:  Tyvon Branch, Trevor Scott, Matt Shaugnessy, Louis Murphy, Zach Miller and Chaz Schilens.  This young talent may have taught Al Davis that drafting and building a strong core is the way to create a dynasty.  Now Al Davis has committed to his rising stars.      With the release of Gerard [...] Continue reading →
The second installment of the Patriots Free Agency Hindsight Report is ready for release after a significant week of movement!  Enough intro, let's get right into it here: -TE Ben Watson is officially a member of the Cleveland Browns.  No surprise that they lost him - they didn't have a lot of incentive to bring back a player that only had one season with at least 40 catches and 500 yards (2006 his third season: 49 catches, 643 yards, 3 TDs).  In fact, the Patriots faced almost the same situation in 2007 when they let 2002 first round pick TE Daniel Graham go after five seasons (none with at least 40 catches and 500 yards).  More on this later. -CB Leigh Bodden re-signed with the Patriots.  His new contract is for 4 years, $22 million, with $10 million guaranteed.  Starter's [...] Continue reading →
There are certain athletes in professional sports that establish a reputation as fan favorites among the city they play in. When the Philadelphia Eagles released Hank Baskett prior to the 2009 season, fans said goodbye to a player who provided plenty of memories during the first three years of his career. After one season with the Indianapolis Colts, Baskett will return to the team he started his career off with after signing a one-year deal with the Eagles. While he never possessed the skills as a top wideout for Philadelphia, Baskett provided the Eagles with a number of big plays over his three years [...] Continue reading →
After six years backing up Peyton Manning, Jim Sorgi was released by the Colts about a week ago. But it doesn't mean he can stay away from Manning. It's not Peyton we are talking about anymore: it's Eli. The New York Giants have signed Sorgi to a one-year deal. He served pretty well backing up Peyton. Sorgi will be competing with Rhett Bomar for the No. 2 spot. Sorgi was placed on IR last season with a bad shouler. After trying out for New York, he said his shoulder felt fine. Sorgi has 929 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception in his career with the Colts. We'll just have to wait and see what he does in New York [...] Continue reading →
The Cleveland Browns have signed former New England tight end Ben Watson to a three year deal. Watson, 29, gives the Browns a much needed receiving threat at TE. Last year he had 29 catches for 404 yards and five touchdowns. Watson will team with Evan Moore to give the Browns a very respectable pair of tight ends. Cleveland continues to sign solid veterans. With the signing of linebacker Scott Fujita, right tackle Tony Pashos,  Watson, and the trade for Seneca Wallace, the Browns are filling holes with quality veterans. Maybe they aren't marque names but they are an upgrade none the less. Last year Eric Mangini started building the Browns with smart, selfless, high charactor players.  Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert seem to be doing more of the same this [...] Continue reading →
