Bills win another one for new head coach Perry Fewell. Bills beat the Chiefs 16-10
The Buffalo Bills visited the Kansas City Chiefs this past Sunday and escaped with a victory improving their record to 5-8 overall and 2-1 under new head coach Perry Fewell.
Needless to say, a win is a win but it wasn’t pretty. Coming into the game, the Chiefs only had three wins themselves so we can say very comfortably that this game wasn’t going to be a potential postseason game or feature a playoff team in any way, shape, or form.
Even though the starting quarterback change from Trent Edwards to Ryan Fitzpatrick has resulted in two more wins, the QB position has not lived up to any stellar expectations. Against the Chiefs, Fitzpatrick went 12-for-20 for 86 yards, one touchdown and one interception. For a veteran QB against a Kansas City defense ranked near the bottom of the NFL, these are numbers I would expect from a rookie quarterback or JaMarcus Russell. Did I mention that Fitzpatrick had a fumble too?
The receiver core was less then enjoyable to watch as they accumulated just 86 yards, one touchdown and one fumble. All I can say about these numbers is thank goodness the running backs made the flight to Kansas City this weekend. The running back duo of Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch tallied 216 total yards on the ground to keep the ball moving down field. Jackson and Lynch did not score, but they were the prime reason why Fitzpatrick even had one touchdown and kicker Rian Lindell was able to make so many field goals. Lindell finished was 3-of-4 on field goals and 1-for-1 on extra points scoring a total of 10 points for the Bills.
Overall grade for the offense this week; D.
One the other side of the ball, the Bills defense picked apart the passing game of Chiefs QB Matt Cassel. Matt finished the game with 243 yards by going 26-for-43 and four interceptions. Yes, the Bills backfield and linebacker core all scooped up at least one interception to total four.
Fan favorites Jairus Byrd and Paul Posluszny each had one interception along with Terrence McGee and George Wilson.Even though interceptions were being rained on, the rushing defense looked non-existent. Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles ran for 143 yards on only 20 attempts with one touchdown. Charles’ biggest gain came on a 76 yard run for a touchdown. These are unacceptable numbers for the Chiefs to have against the Bills.
Bills defense grade; B.
Special teams did its part again and so did Rian Lindell, no surprise.
Special teams grade; A.
As if things couldn’t get any worse for the Bills, this week they take on the Patriots. The last time these teams played each other in Week One of the regular season, the Bills took the Pats to the wire and lost by one point. Of course, Tom Brady had 378 yards passing and Randy Moss accumulated 141 of receiving yards. This is much a different Patriots team from earlier in the season, but so is the Bills backfield. Nothing would be better than to beat the Patriots at home in front of the Bills’ faithful.
So as the Bills watch their season come to an end with only three games left, one can only wonder what next year will bring to Buffalo.
Jeremy, overall, do you think Fewell deserves to get a chance to become the regular head coach of the Bills next year?
Bills is a great man.I think he will do a job next time.is it right?
what do you think about the 2010 NFL draft?
Merry Christmas! And have a good time!
Doug:
Yes, I do think Fewell deserves a chance to become the head coach, however only if he has a winning record by the end of the season. Last year, Fewell was labeled as one of the top “up and coming coaches” on yahoo sports and I have have to agree with that. As it looks right now, I don’t see any other opportunity coming in to interview as far as a “big name coach” is concerned.
NFL Draft:
Yes, I think the Bills will be better next year being that they have a new team mentality and a new coach. I think the draft will be interesting with many holes to be filled. They may want to think about the offensive side of the ball instead of the defense this draft. The backfield is set, as well as, the LB core. The D-line needs a little work with stopping the run. I see them going after a receiver and D-line guys.
