Bills Shutdown the Passing Game, but Forget About the Run in 27-7 Loss to Saints
It’s back to the drawing board this week for the Bills as they prepare and to fly to sunny Miami, Florida to take on the Dolphins. First, let’s break down the horrible game that was played Sunday.
Well, the Bills were in it up until the Saints running game were introduced and the Bills’ no-huddle fell asleep. Of course, let’s not forget that the only way the Bills found the end-zone was through their punter, Brian Moorman, who threw a great pass to the back-up defensive end, Ryan Denney. Unfortunately, this would be the only points scored for your Bills the entire game.
Speaking of passing and on a good note, the Bills defense was pretty impressive by not allowing Drew Brees to throw for 1000 yards and nine touchdowns. The defense held him to less attractive numbers; going 16- for-29, 179 yards and NO (I repeat NO) touchdowns. This is great considering Brees was averaging 260 yards passing and four touchdowns coming into this game. Even though they made the adjustments to shut down the passing game, the Bills forgot about those skilled running backs for the Saints.
The Saints rushing attack embarrassed the Bills’ defense, sometimes even with nine guys in the box. Pierre Thomas had a career setting day as he ran for 126 yards on only 14 attempts, while notching two touchdowns in the process. Former Heisman Trophy Winner, Reggie Bush notched 64 yards on 13 rushing attempts. Finishing out the rushing yards that totaled 222 yards was Drew Brees adding eight and Lynell Hamilton with 24.
Needless to say, this was an extremely frustrating game in front of the Bills faithful. Going into halftime, I was very optimistic, because I thought Jauron and Van Pelt would make the appropriate adjustments to get the offense going and score a few. Unfortunately, I was WRONG.
Trent Edwards finished with 156 yards and completed 20 passes on 35 attempts and one interception. The up and coming Fred Jackson did find 71 yards of real estate, but failed to find the end zone.
Let’s not forget the big signing of the year, Terrell “my toe hurts” Owens who had a goose egg across the board. Wait a minute; was he even on the field? Furthermore, the whole receiving core was horrific.
I have to tell you, there was nothing that I saw after the game last week that improved this week. The offense was boring and the defense forgot how to tackle running backs. I think the next Bills’ practice should be Football 101 so they can learn the basics. The course would go something like this; this is a football, the end-zones are at the end of either side of the field, this is how you throw, this is how you catch and most importantly this is how you tackle.
The Bills better start winning soon. Otherwise, as good as the AFC looks this year they will be on the outside looking in again during playoff time. All I can say is “Squish the Fish” next week.
