Oh, I can recall a time not too long ago when I didn’t even imagine this article would need to be written. Looking back to week four, the 49ers were looking good. They sat at 3-1 and nowhere to go but up. They controlled their own destiny. Nobody was telling us anything, they were showing us. So what happened?
The Niners season has been plagued with what are called “morale victories”. Basically, this team finished 7-9 last season under Mike Nolan and naturally, some time for improvement was needed. The team could handle a loss every now and then so long as this looked like an improved unit when all was said and done.
And they did. In week three the 49ers got their first loss of the season, but what did it take? It took the play [...]

49ers TE Vernon Davis has already made franchise history for the San Francisco 49ers. Not only did he become the single season tight end touchdown leader for the team with 10 earlier this season (breaking the previous record of 9 set by Ted Kwalik in 1972) but now he’s got his sights set on perhaps a more prestigious record—tying and breaking the record for most touchdowns for a TE in a single season throughout all teams in the NFL.

I had the opportunity just a couple days ago to give a phone interview to legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice. Rice is working with Gillette and the NFL to give fans behind-the-scenes looks into selected team locker rooms to try and get the fans closer to the game. The promotion also offers the chance to win tickets to the 2010 Super Bowl and a lot of other cool things. For more information on the promotion head over to NFL.com/LockerRoom and sign up to win and get exclusive access.
I got a chance to ask him a few questions regarding this promotion, his own experiences in the locker room and his upcoming Hall of Fame eligibility. We also touch up a few times on the current state of the San Francisco 49ers and of course, head coach Mike Singletary and our young receiver in Michael [...]

Tony Pashos to IR - The 49ers announced yesterday that they placed veteran tackle Tony Pashos on injured reserve. Pashos was signed in early September as a free agent after being cut by the Jaguars due to a contract dispute. Pashos received his first start of the season last Sunday at Houston and suffered a fractured scapula early in the game. His replacement at RT is going to be Adam Snyder, whom Pashos had recently beat out for the starting job. Snyder's assignment last Sunday was to rotate with Chilo Rachal at the RG position.
The team also went out and signed T Chris Patrick from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad but he doesn't look to factor into the game plan anytime soon. The offensive line has been a real issue this season for the 49ers after receiving much [...]

It was announced a few days ago that San Francisco 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree would receive some playing time this coming Sunday against the Houston Texans. It was rumored and then generally accepted as truth that Crabtree would be in on 12-15 snaps as a slot receiver to evaluate how the rookie could bring to the table for the team this season. Much like I expected however, it seems his role may be a bigger one than previously expected. It was said yesterday that he'll likely be starting the game in place of WR Josh Morgan.
While I figured more playing time would be in order, I hardly expected him to get the nod over Morgan. It makes you wonder if Crabtree was just that good in practice or if Morgan was just that bad in the game. I'd suppose it's neither and more likely the fact [...]

As fans, we of the 49ers faith have successfully made it through the bye week. It was tough, I'll admit, not having a game to look forward to. In that, as opposed to putting the Atlanta game behind ourselves and concentrating on the opponent at hand, we were sort of forced to sit and reflect on it throughout the week. Today marks my first look ahead, to next Sunday and the 49ers matchup against the Houston Texans.
More so than exactly how the game will turn out, the hot ticket for discussion these days in 49erland is WR Michael Crabtree and his potential impact on the San Francisco 49ers this season. Crabtree signed a 6-year, 32 million dollar contract with 17 million guaranteed on October 7th after setting a 49ers franchise record by holding out longer than any Niners draftee in [...]

A couple months ago around the draft I posted an article titled "Protecting The 49ers Signal Caller." In said article I talked about what the team needed as far as offensive line help. I talked about the Niners needs at the right tackle position and both guard positions. The top prospects were Eugene Monroe, Jason Smith, Andre Smith and Michael Oher. I talked about the team and their tenth pick and who would be suitable.
The 49ers did not take an offensive lineman in the entire draft, while it was considered to be one of the team's biggest needs.
Fast forward a little while and the 49ers are looking like they knew what they were doing, they signed a kid by the name of Alex Boone who could be the right tackle of the future and they signed a veteran in Marvel Smith. Throughout [...]

Paying Close Attention To Numbers
2-0 sure does feel good to start the season. Even better, the team is 2-0 in the NFC West after wins over division rivals Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks in weeks one and two. How about some even better numbers for you? Quarterback Shaun Hill is now 9-3 as a starter and remains undefeated at Candlestick Park. How about some more numbers?
QB Shaun Hill has an 87.8 QB rating thus far and has thrown zero interceptions, one of only five QBs yet to throw one so far this season. HB Frank Gore is just the second running back of all time to have two touchdown runs of over 75 yards in a single game. The other? Legendary running back Barry Sanders. Gore also accounts for all four of the team's offensive touchdowns so far this season. [...]

Barring any unlikely trades or an ever increasingly unlikely signing of a certain first round pick the San Francisco 49ers have their 53-man roster set in stone and are gearing up for the regular season.
The very same regular season that officially begins today. The 49ers are set to play the Cardinals in Arizona on Sunday and now that we know what the roster looks like, it should be a bit easier making some predictions for the game. I'm working on rolling out a game preview tomorrow but for now I'm going to take a look at the whole 53 by position, starting this morning with the offense.
Quarterbacks: 1st Shaun Hill, 2nd Alex Smith, 3rd Nate Davis
The 49ers have stability at the position, or at least for the first time in three seasons the team is [...]

One of my favorite things to do is speculate. I can speculate how Shaun Hill will perform this season, I can speculate which tight end will catch the most passes. I can speculate how many times a punt will hit the Cowboys' video board this coming season, but one of my favorite speculations is on the final roster of 53 and who will win their respective positional battles.
So here's how I believe the final roster will look come opening day. The 49ers, along with the rest of the league, have to have their rosters trimmed down to 53 players by September 5th, just one day after their final preseason game. This of course means that this game is likely very important for guys like Curtis Taylor and Ricky Jean-Francois, while some others may just be locks... I'll get right to it. Keep in mind [...]
