The Texans won a wet one in Kansas City for their preseason opener on the strength of Chris Brown's TD run and Kris Brown's leg.  QB Matt Schuab was 7-7 for 70 yards in limited action along with the rest of the starters then it was time to watch the rookies try their hands. Granted this is preseason and no one outside of K.C. really expects much from the Chiefs this year but it was FOOTBALL!  the Texans starters played just two series and then the second and third strings took over.  The starting offense looks to pickup right where they left off last season and the defense looks improved already. The second and third string guys played very well considering the weather and held the Chiefs to just 10 points despite the Chiefs starters playing well into the 2nd quarter. By the [...] Continue reading →
The Texans' training camp opened last Thursday, with the rookies reporting, veterans reporting on Friday, and already the battles for spots on the roster have started. All of the starters from last year showed up, with the exception of Dunta Robinson, even though not all of them have long term contracts worked out yet.  TE Owen Daniels and LB DeMeco Ryans have both discussed their dissatisfaction with their contract status, but both are in camp and working hard to help the defense and offense improve. The injury bug has [...] Continue reading →
Or how to talk to Dunta! With training camp only days away and most of the Texans key pieces signed I thought we should look at Dunta Robinson and the contract situation.  By now everyone knows that Dunta is not happy with the franchise tag. While I agree that Dunta is a big part of our defense, especially the secondary, I do not agree that he is worth the top money for CB's that he and his agent seem to think he is worth.  Dunta showed that he is a better than average corner last year when he came back from a possibly career ending injury and played very well for the most part.  He brings a lot of attitude to the secondary and is the leader back there however he is not the shutdown corner that he thinks he is. Here are Dunta's career stats:  gms 68, total tackles 332, sacks [...] Continue reading →
It's still a couple of weeks, more or less, until training camp starts, and the football news is slower than a snail.  Since there is really no news to talk of, other than a few things I will get into later,  I thought now would be a good time to update everyone on what the so called "experts", a.k.a. Talking Heads, have to say about our Texans and the upcoming season. I have perused all of the magazines and websites, that I could find or think of, with the exception of ESPN, and the considered opinion of all of the writers/editors, et. al., is that the Texans will take third place in the AFC South, again, and have their first winning season.  With one exception, one person (other than our own Andy) did have the Texans winning the AFC South, however, I can't remember who or where [...] Continue reading →
The fantasy football magazines are coming out and there are several Texans in the spotlight for fantasy football players to consider. For those of you who play fantasy sports let's run down who you should be looking at from the Texans this year. WR Andre Johnson:  Rated in the top 5 amongst wide receivers in the NFL, if you can get him do it but don't expect him to last into the second round of the draft. RB Steve Slayton:  Rated in the top 15 amongst running backs in the NFL, that being said I am in three leagues and Slayton has not lasted past the first round in any of them (no, I didn't get him except once).  With a healthy backup his carries will drop this year but I believe his actual value will increase. QB Matt [...] Continue reading →
While surfing the NFL and Texans' sites I ran across this question poised on the Battle Red Blog website ( I believe by Transient Texan ) and thought it was an excellent diversion at this time of the year.  So here is your mission, should you decide to accept it.  Who would you want under center for your team? The obvious choices are of course Payton and Brady, but if you remove those two from the list, which active QB would you want.  Since I am a serious Texans fan I had to do some deep soul searching and research to come up with a QB that I could see making the calls for the offense.  I finally decided that it would have to be Drew Brees. Of all the good/bad/indeferent QB's in the league, Brees is the only one, besides Payton and Brady, who has the arm strength and touch to [...] Continue reading →
After a long Memorial Day weekend the Texans returned to the practice field this week to continue workouts and training.  The main thrust has been and continues to be the defense. DE Antonio Smith worked out with the team for the first time this week.  He is still learning the new system but is already forecasting the Texans to make the playoffs this year.  Smith is quoted as saying that he has the same vibe with the Texans that he had last year with Arizona. WR and Return man Jacoby Jones is back with a new attitude.  He received his college degree this summer and is training harder than before.  Coach Kubiak has taken notice of Jones' new work ethic and is starting to like what he see's.  It remains to be seen how much he has matured and whether he will play a bigger role in [...] Continue reading →
You can tell football season is getting closer with the start of OTA's.  This past week saw the Texans beginning their OTA's with most of the attention on the rookies and some attention to the free agents that were picked up. Coach Kubiak stressed to the rookies that this is the first of many workouts and to not go all out.  Fat lot of good that did him.  TE James Casey got into the flow of things and when one of the passes thrown his way was a little outside, he dove for it and came up with the catch, woops. Rookie LB Brian Cushing put on a good showing last week flying all over the field and getting his hands on the ball a few times.  This is a good sign that he is committed to making the team and going for a starters position.  DC Frank Bush is putting quite the load on [...] Continue reading →
Now I am not a superstitious person by nature.  Friday the 13th is just another day, walking under a ladder is OK unless someone drops something on you, breaking a mirror does not bring seven years of bad luck and stepping on a crack does not break your mothers back. This being said I have to wonder about the Texans and Battle Red Day.  I have heard and read (as I am sure most of you have also) about athletes who wear the same clothes on game day or eat the same foods.  How about a team that is 7-2 in one uniform but is 40-72 total in 7 seasons. With a winning percentage of only 13.57% overall but 77.77% on Battle Red Day it makes you wonder why they don't wear those jerseys all of the time. With the two loses on Battle Red Day both occurred in 2005 when the Texans managed to win [...] Continue reading →
Now that the draft is over we can all relax until training camp starts...... oh wait, there is still the rookie free agents to look at and possibly sign and all of the mini-camps/OTA's. The Texans had a defense heavy draft this year which makes sense given that the offense was ranked #4 overall last year but the defense was ranked somewhere around #25 overall. Given all of that, most people were surprised that the Texans did not draft a RB somewhere around the 5th round but they did draft two TE's. This baffled just about everyone considering they have Pro Bowler Owen Daniels. Well the Texans have not been resting since the draft.  They have been very busy evaluating and signing rookie free [...] Continue reading →
