2012 NFL Playoff Predictions: Denver Broncos at New England Patriots
Well, they did it again. Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos (9-8) capped off the wildcard round of the 2012 NFL Playoffs with yet another wild and unreal fantastic finish, knocking off the Pittsburgh Steelers in remarkable overtime fashion to advance to the Divisional Round with a rematch scheduled against Tom Bradyand the top-seeded New England Patriots (13-3) on Saturday night at 8:30pm EST on CBS at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA.
Everyone is giving the edge to New England and probably for good reason. Well, not everyone. Not NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora, who’s received more heat than when he was sweating through suits right and left in Washington D.C. in the summer with non-stop exhaustive reports on the NFL lockout. However, as I’ve pointed out on numerous occasions, he’s one of the most accurate analysts and insiders in the industry and his audacious prediction should not be dismissed.
In fact, even before the Steelers-Broncos match got underway, I had a very strong feeling that the Steelers would leave Foxborough empty-handed if they beat the Broncos, but if Denver defeated Pittsburgh, Tebow and co. would also somehow manage to topple New England as well.
Soft Schedule: Off the top of your head, name the number of teams New England beat that ended the regular season with a winning record. Answer: None. The Pats have beat one playoff team—the Broncos. Denver defeated two playoff teams—the Steelers and Bengals.
The Tebows and Brady Bunch: For those who love to spend time with friends and family, drink and play games, you’re in luck. There’s no better time to play a drinking game than during this postseason collision where you toss one back every time you hear the names of one of the starting quarterbacks mentioned.
Warning: You may want to choose your beverage wisely. You’re liable to hear at least one of their names used in at least every other sentence.
Take a gander at NFL.com’s tale of the tape comparison of Tom and Tim. Brady clearly has the edge in terms of postseason success and assembled better numbers in their Week 15 get-together, but Tebow’s done very well for himself through his first 14 career starts and had a stellar showing against the Steel Curtain, with a 125.6 QB rating, two touchdowns to no interceptions with 50 yards and a score on the ground and 316 yards through the air, the most passing yards Pittsburgh surrendered to any team all year.
Tebow Talk: The Tebow footprint just keeps spreading. Now the newest talk involves Katy Perry matchmaking, a partnership with Tiger Woods and even Colorado lawmakers. How will the polarizing player perform in Round Two with the Patriots? Better than the first time around in all likelihood. Everything was going very good in the first meeting until running back Willis McGahee went down with a game-ending injury in the first half. An array of turnovers one right after another quickly ensued as the Broncos became much more one-dimensional.
Fells Welcomes Haters: McGahee will be good to go in this matchup and tight end Daniel Fells (ankle), who’s listed as probable, said his team feeds off the negativity on Wednesday, according to ESPN.com.
“I love listening to people hate on us. I mean, you can hate if you want to, but we’re still here and we’re moving forward. The more you hate, the more we feed off of it.”
The 28-year-old tight end has no problem with his team being the underdog, either. “I like being the underdog, because no one’s giving you a chance and you get to prove everyone wrong—just like we have all year.”
It certainly doesn’t hurt to be in Denver’s shoes, having virtually nothing to lose, while New England faces a Super Bowl or bust state of affairs as pressure reaching its boiling point.
In addition, as I mentioned in last week’s Steelers-Broncos game prediction, “Tebow and co. [may] need to be doused in doubt in order to deliver. During their six-game winning streak, the Broncos were the underdog in every contest.”
While New England was also favored to beat Denver, the Patriots also appeared to be clearly the better team at the time and the McGahee’s injury cost the Broncos dearly.
Battered Players: Star rookie linebackerVon Miller (thumb) and defensive endElvis Dumervil (ankle) combined for 21 sacks in the regular season and are both probable to start Saturday evening. Brian Dawkins (neck) is listed as doubtful and Patriots safety Patrick Chung (knee) is questionable. James Ihedigbo (shoulder), cornerback Kyle Arrington (foot) and four linebackers in Tracy White (abdomen), Rob Ninkovich (hip), Dane Fletcher (thumb) and Brandon Spikes (knee) are all also questionable.
On offense, wide receivers Wes Welker (knee) and Matt Slater (shoulder), guards Logan Mankins (knee) and Dan Connolly (groin), tackles Sebastian Vollmer (back) and Marcus Cannon (ankle) are all also included in the laundry list of injured players who are questionable. Three others in Swiss army knife Julian Edelman (back), tackle Matt Light (ankle) and cornerback Devin McCourty (shoulder) were all also limited in practice and listed as uncertain.
Quarterback Tom Brady (left shoulder) was the only Patriots player on the injury report in full practice and defensive tackle Kyle Love (not injury related) was the only one not to practice. Only Broncos receiver Eric Decker (knee) and long-snapper Lonie Paxton (not injury-related) are absolutely out of the lineup.
Restraining the tight end tandem of Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkoswski will be one tough-ass-task, but Denver’s defense has a stronger chance of surviving with Miller and Dumervil ready to roll. Controlling the clock and keeping Brady and company on the sidelines with a read-option, run-heavy approach are an absolute must.
Call me crazy, but I’m riding the Tebow train again. I’m not buying the Patriots as an elite team this year and the Broncos win and lose games they’re not supposed to typically when least expected and in consecutive fashion. That trend continues here, as the game once again ends with remarkable infatuation. Prediction: Denver 34, New England 30
